Land Rover Range Rover Key History
Unified Fob Era
Land Rover unified the Range Rover's remote and transponder into a single remote-head key. The transponder chip moved from the key blade into the fob body, and a flip blade provided the physical key function.
Smart Key Introduction
Land Rover brought proximity smart key technology to the Range Rover, allowing keyless entry and push-button start. Drivers could keep the fob in their pocket and never physically insert a key.
Legacy Platform
This legacy Range Rover platform used a key system that Land Rover has since discontinued. Parts are still available and we carry compatible blanks, but the programming approach is unique to this generation.
Dual-Mode Period
The Range Rover offered both traditional key and smart key options simultaneously depending on trim level, creating two parallel key systems within the same model year.
Which Key Does Your Range Rover Have?
A basic 3 or 4 button remote with lock, unlock, and trunk/panic buttons. Communicates via radio frequency for door functions only. Paired separately from the transponder key.
A key with a transponder chip but no remote buttons. You get immobilizer security (the car will not start without a programmed chip) but no remote lock/unlock. A separate fob can be added for remote functions.
Basic key with a chip - turns in the ignition like a traditional key but contains a transponder that must match the immobilizer. No remote functions. The simplest and least expensive key type to replace.

How We Compare to the Land Rover Dealer on Range Rover Keys
Land Rover dealers cannot come to you. If your Range Rover has no working key, you pay for a tow plus the key plus the programming. We eliminate the tow entirely.
Common Land Rover Range Rover Key Issues
Range Rover Key Fob Not Pairing After Programming
Proximity in your L405 or L460 smart key is always listening for the vehicle, even from inside your house. That constant communication chews CR2032s fast, sometimes in months. Replacing more than twice a year is normal; bring it by to confirm the fob is fine.
Range Rover Key Blade Worn Down
L322 key suddenly won't start the engine though it turns. Happens after a dead battery, jump, or long sit. The ID46 transponder lost sync with the immobilizer; only fix is a full reprogram with diagnostic tools and your security PIN. Common in Rancho Bernardo.
Dead Key Fob Battery
L405 owners think the smart key died when the culprit is a faulty door handle antenna. Fob fine, battery fine, but the vehicle can't detect the key. We test antennas and fob separately before recommending. Antenna? We tell you. Fob? We reprogram on the spot.
Can You Program a Range Rover Key Yourself?
Land Rover Range Rover: No self-programming. Land Rover uses a proprietary encryption handshake that changes per vehicle. Even having the correct blank is not enough - the programming must go through authorized tools.
Land Rover Range Rover: Self-programming was disabled starting this model year. Previous years of the Range Rover allowed it, but Land Rover removed the capability as a security measure.
Land Rover Range Rover: On-board key learning available. With a working key, cycle the ignition ON-OFF 3 times within 10 seconds, ending in ON. The security light will flash. Within 30 seconds, press any button on the new fob. Locks will cycle to confirm.
