How We Compare to the Land Rover Dealer on Range Rover Keys
A Land Rover dealer will not come to you. If your Range Rover has no working key, you are looking at a tow charge on top of the key cost on top of the programming fee. EZ Car Keyz drives to your San Diego County location and handles everything on-site, so the tow bill never enters the equation.
Which Key Does Your Range Rover Have?
A 3 or 4 button remote handling lock, unlock, trunk, and panic functions over radio frequency. It controls the doors only and is paired separately from the transponder key. Straightforward to replace and one of the more affordable options we quote for the Range Rover.
A key blade with a transponder chip and no remote buttons. The factory immobilizer will not allow the engine to start without a properly programmed chip, so this key provides real security. Remote lock and unlock are not included, though a separate remote can be added. We quote the chip programming and any additional remote work as separate line items.
A basic key that turns in the ignition like a traditional key but carries a transponder chip the factory immobilizer must recognize before the engine will start. No remote functions are included. This is the simplest Range Rover key type to replace, and typically the lowest-priced option we quote.
Land Rover Range Rover Key History
Unified Fob Era
Land Rover combined the remote and the transponder chip into one remote head key during this period. The chip moved out of the key blade and into the fob body, while a flip blade handled the physical cutting. Losing this key meant replacing both the remote and the transponder at the same time, which is something we quote up front so there are no surprises at the end of the job.
Smart Key Era
Land Rover brought proximity smart key technology to the Range Rover, letting drivers start the engine and unlock doors without ever pulling the fob out of a pocket. The trade-off is a more involved programming process that requires dealer-grade programming equipment to complete correctly. We carry the equipment and quote the work before we arrive.
Legacy Key Era
This earlier Range Rover generation used a key system Land Rover no longer produces. Compatible blanks are still available and we stock them, but the programming approach is unique to this generation. If you drive one of these in San Diego County, call us first so we can confirm blank availability and give you a firm price before rolling out.
Dual-Mode Period
During this stretch, Land Rover offered both a traditional key option and a smart key option on the Range Rover at the same time, with the choice depending on trim level. Two different key systems existed within the same model year. Knowing exactly which trim you have lets us quote the right key at the right price rather than guessing on your driveway.

Common Land Rover Range Rover Key Issues
Range Rover Key Fob Not Pairing After Programming
If a newly programmed Range Rover key fob still will not pair, the most likely causes are an incomplete programming sequence or a fob that does not match the vehicle's specific requirements. Different Range Rover trim levels and years require different fob types that are not interchangeable. We confirm the correct fob before quoting and before cutting, so San Diego customers are not paying for the wrong part.
Range Rover Key Blade Worn Down
Key blades wear gradually from daily use, and a worn blade can start slipping in the ignition or sticking in a door cylinder. Copying a worn blade only duplicates the problem. We pull the original key code and cut a fresh blade from that data instead, so the new key fits the way it was designed to from the factory.
Dead Key Fob Battery
The Range Rover key fob runs on a replaceable coin cell battery. When it dies, door unlocking and remote start stop working and the dashboard typically shows a key battery warning before full failure. Swap in a fresh battery and the fob should work normally without any reprogramming. If the fob still does not respond after a battery change, the issue may be something other than the battery, and we can diagnose that on-site.
Can You Program a Range Rover Key Yourself?
For most Range Rover models, self-programming is not possible. Land Rover uses a proprietary encryption process that is unique to each vehicle, meaning having the right blank key is not enough on its own. The programming must go through dealer-grade programming equipment, which is what we bring to your San Diego County location.
On certain Range Rover model years, Land Rover removed the self-programming option that earlier versions allowed. The capability was disabled as a security measure, so even owners who programmed their own keys before will find that process no longer works on later vehicles.
A limited number of Range Rover years do support on-board key learning when at least one working key is present. The process involves cycling the ignition on and off in a specific sequence, watching for a security light confirmation, and pressing a button on the new fob within a set time window. Locks will cycle to confirm success. If you are unsure whether your year qualifies, call us first so we can give you an honest answer before you spend time trying.
