I got a call from a guy over in Alpine Village, parked in his driveway, Range Rover sitting there completely dead to him. Not dead as in battery. Dead as in he had a key, turned it, heard it crank, and then it quit within about a second and a half. Every time.
He had already been to a locksmith the week before. That locksmith programmed the remote. Buttons worked, doors locked, he paid and sent the guy on his way. Then the next morning the car just would not stay running. He assumed the other locksmith had broken something. He was frustrated in the way people get when they feel like they paid for a problem instead of a solution.
I sat with him for a minute and explained what had actually happened. The remote and the immobilizer enrollment are two separate jobs on this vehicle. The first locksmith did one of them. The transponder chip in that key had never been registered to the security module. The car saw an unknown chip and shut the engine down, exactly the way it is supposed to.
I plugged in, ran through the enrollment with the existing working key present first, then registered the new key. Cranked right up and stayed running. He sat in the driver seat for a moment longer than necessary, like he was waiting for it to die again.
He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him for the whole job. I had already finished it for a fraction of that, in his driveway, in under forty minutes.
