I got a call from a guy parked on Third Avenue in Downtown Chula Vista. 2012 Range Rover, wouldn't start. He'd already swapped the battery in the fob, tried holding it up to the start button the way people do when they've watched one too many YouTube videos, and nothing. Just a key-not-detected warning on the dash and a car that wasn't going anywhere.
I pulled up, and the first thing I did was confirm the fob was actually transmitting. It was. Doors locked and unlocked without a problem. That told me the remote side was fine. The issue was on the immobilizer enrollment. Somewhere along the way, that fob's transponder had dropped its pairing with the vehicle's security system. Could have been a battery swap that went sideways, could have been a second-hand fob someone tried to self-program before giving up. Doesn't matter. The symptom is the same.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the key management side of the system, and re-enrolled the fob. The whole process took about 25 minutes on the curb. When the engine turned over clean on the first try, he just kind of laughed, the way people do when they've been stressing about something for hours and then it's suddenly just done.
He mentioned the dealer wanted to keep the car for two days and had quoted him something that made him hesitate long enough to call me instead. I don't need two days. I need a parking spot.
