I got a call out to Coronado Village on a Tuesday morning. The owner of a 2011 Range Rover had been dealing with an intermittent key fault for about two weeks before it finally stopped working entirely.
She told me she'd already swapped the battery twice. The fob was reading correctly on the dash sometimes, then a key-not-detected warning the next morning, then fine again, then dead. Classic symptom of a fob that had taken some abuse. These things get tossed in bags, dropped on tile, sat on.
When I got to her on the street, I opened the fob right there on the hood. The CR2032 was brand new, but the internal contact on one side had a slight bow to it from what looked like a pry-open job. The battery was rocking instead of sitting flat. On top of that, one of the internal circuit contacts had oxidation on it that you'd only see if you were looking.
Cleaned the contacts, corrected the battery seat, closed it up, and ran a full test cycle through my diagnostic equipment to confirm the fob was talking to the key management module properly. Walked every function: doors, proximity sense, all five buttons. Everything came back clean.
She'd already called the dealer before she called me. They told her they'd need the car brought in, possibly an overnight, and she'd need to order a new fob. No diagnostic, just assume it needs replacing. With me, she kept her original fob and was back on the road in under forty-five minutes. The dealer quote was the afterthought.
