2020 Land Rover Range Rover
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Does my 2020 Range Rover have to be towed to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right JLR-capable tools can do all-keys-lost right where the vehicle is parked. Dealers will often tell you to flatbed it in, and Range Rover owners on forums have documented their vehicles sitting at dealerships for extended periods waiting on parts, scheduling, or module orders. We come to you in Peutz Valley or anywhere in Alpine and handle the job the same day in most cases, no tow required.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2020 Range Rover?

On site, plan for one to two hours. The 2020 Range Rover's security architecture requires a proper diagnostic sequence with authenticated JLR tooling, and some of that process has built-in timing you can't rush. It's not a quick plug-and-play job, but it's also not an all-day affair when the tech has the right equipment and knows the platform. Dealer timelines are a different story. Forum threads are full of owners describing weeks-long waits, parts arriving incorrect, and vehicles sitting undriven.

Q: My 2020 Range Rover shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob is in my hand. What's going on?

This is one of the most common complaints I see from Range Rover owners online. A few things can cause it. First suspect is always the fob battery. A CR2032 that's low but not fully dead can cause exactly this: the vehicle sees the fob intermittently, throws a warning, then clears it a moment later. Swap the battery before assuming anything bigger is wrong.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have someone program it?

You can, but buy carefully. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID on your existing fob exactly. If you pull the back cover off your current fob you'll see the ID printed there. An incompatible fob won't pair no matter how good the programming equipment is. Assuming you get the right part, yes, a locksmith with JLR tooling can register it to your vehicle. You'll still need the emergency blade cut to match your door and ignition cylinder.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from Peutz Valley, out in Alpine. The owner had one working fob left for his 2020 Range Rover and he'd already lost the other one months back. He wanted a spare made before he ended up stuck entirely.

When I got there, he handed me the remaining fob and told me it had been acting up. Touch unlock on the driver's door was slow to respond, and twice that week the start button had shown him a key-not-detected warning before recognizing the fob a few seconds later. He figured it was just the fob being temperamental.

I popped the back cover and checked the CR2032 first. The battery read low on the meter, not dead, just tired enough to make the signal inconsistent. That explained exactly what he'd been seeing. Swapped it, seated it right, and the door handle came back to life immediately.

Then came the actual job he'd called for. I connected to the vehicle through the diagnostic port with my JLR toolset, authenticated into the immobilizer, and registered a new fob to the system alongside his existing one. Cut the emergency blade to match the vehicle, verified it worked in the door cylinder, and walked every function: all doors, lock, unlock, start. Everything behaved.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause long enough to call around. He saved a good chunk by having me come to him in Alpine instead. That part was almost an afterthought by the time we were done.

Land Rover Range Rover Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2020 Range Rover. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on a 2020 Range Rover is doable, and it's a job we handle on site. The process involves authenticating into the vehicle's immobilizer and key management system using JLR-specific diagnostic equipment, re-establishing the security baseline, and registering fresh fobs from scratch. The emergency blade also gets cut to the vehicle. This is one of the more involved jobs in the mobile locksmith world.
