2021 Land Rover Range Rover
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in Shadowridge, over near the golf course side. He had a 2021 Range Rover that would not acknowledge either of his two fobs.

Not one door would respond to touch, the push area on the handles did nothing, and the dash was sitting there telling him the key was not detected. He had already bought a CR2032 and swapped it in himself. Still nothing.

He figured the fob was toast. His wife was out of town with the second one, so he could not even test it against the car. He called the Land Rover dealer first. They told him to have it towed in, that programming could not be done anywhere else, and that availability for a loaner was limited. He did not love that answer so he went looking.

I pulled up to his driveway with the car sitting there, both doors locked, fob in his hand doing nothing. First thing I did was pull the emergency blade out of his fob and got him into the car the manual way. That alone settled him down a little.

Ran diagnostics on the vehicle security system through the OBD port. The fob had not lost its programming entirely, but the vehicle was throwing a fault that was preventing key recognition. Cleared it, re-synced the fob, walked every function: handle touch unlock on both front doors, the lock-touch on the handles, all five buttons, interior recognition. Everything came back.

He asked me what the dealer would have done. I told him probably the same thing, after the tow, the wait, and a bill that reflected none of those efficiencies. He just nodded. Saved a good chunk going the mobile route.
