2009 Land Rover Range Rover
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement flip key last on a 2009 Range Rover?

The programming side is indefinite. It doesn't degrade. What actually wears on this generation is the physical flip mechanism itself: the pivot pin, the spring, and the shell where the blade locks into position. L322 owners on the forums talk about the blade going loose before anything electronic ever fails. If your shell cracks or the pivot gives out, the electronics can usually be moved into a new shell without any reprogramming, which saves you the whole job cost.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. That's what the warranty is for. If the remote loses function, if the immobilizer stops recognizing the key, if anything isn't right, I come back and sort it. I test every function before I leave the job, but if something develops after the fact, that's still my problem to fix. Range Rover owners have posted about going back to dealers multiple times and spending serious money without resolving key detection issues. That's not how this works with me.

Q: My 2009 Range Rover starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Does the whole key need replacing?

Not necessarily. On the L322, the remote RF function and the immobilizer function are handled separately. If the blade turns and the engine runs normally, the transponder side is fine. A dead or weak battery in the fob is the most common reason remote functions quit while start still works, because the ignition system gets a stronger close-range read than the remote receiver does at distance.

Q: Can I add a spare key to my 2009 Range Rover myself, or does it always need a professional?

It needs equipment. There's no onboard DIY sequence for adding a key on this generation. Registration goes through the OBD port with a compatible programmer that can talk to the immobilizer. That's true whether you're adding a spare while you still have a working key or doing an all-keys-lost job starting from scratch.

2009 Land Rover Range Rover Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from Shadowridge, over near the golf course side of Vista. The owner had one key to a 2009 Range Rover and it had been getting flaky for weeks, range dropping, sometimes not recognizing at all. Then one morning it just stopped. No remote function, and when she inserted the blade and turned, the dash threw up a key warning and the engine wouldn't run.

She told me she'd already called the dealer. They said three to five business days minimum, parts ordered to VIN, service calendar backed up. She wasn't trying to wait a week without her truck.

I pulled up with the blank in the van, decoded the blade from her door lock, and cut the replacement on site. Then ran the full programming sequence through the OBD port to register the new fob to the vehicle security system. Tested every function before I put my tools away: remote lock, remote unlock, blade in the ignition, engine start, full cycle. Everything confirmed.

She was back on the road in under an hour. The dealer thing came up only when she said what they'd quoted her, and I just told her to call us next time before she calls them.

Land Rover Range Rover Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2009 Range Rover?▼

We match the key to what the vehicle actually needs. The 2009 Range Rover L322 is a generation where the immobilizer is particular about what it will accept, and that matters when we source blanks. Aftermarket fobs that don't meet OEM spec on this platform are a known headache on the forums, owners describing the remote registering but the immobilizer still refusing to arm or disarm correctly. We verify compatibility before we ever head to your location.
