I got a call from a guy up in Ramona Highlands on a Saturday morning. His 2000 Discovery had been sitting in the driveway for two days. He had one key, and the remote had stopped locking the doors. The engine started fine, so he figured he would just live without the remote for a while. Then the key itself stopped turning smoothly in the ignition. The crank-and-stall was the part that needed more attention. That pattern on this vehicle points to the immobilizer not properly seeing the transponder during startup. I ran a diagnostic and confirmed the transponder signal was weak. I programmed a fresh key on site using my equipment and cleared the issue.
He had called the Land Rover dealer the day before. They told him to bring it in, could not give him a timeline, and the service advisor mentioned the diagnostic alone would be a separate charge before any key work started. He paid a fraction of that route by the time I left his driveway, and the car started clean every time we tested it.
The human moment was him standing there watching me work and saying he almost had it towed. A tow from Ramona Highlands would have added a whole other layer to the morning.
