I was in Bressi Ranch on a Tuesday morning, parked outside one of the townhome complexes off Alicante Road. The owner had a 2017 Discovery that was giving him a key-not-detected warning intermittently, then consistently, then every single time. By the time he called me, the fob was completely unresponsive and he had been using the mechanical backup blade just to get into the car. The engine still started, but only barely, and he wasn't confident it would keep doing that.
He had already ordered a replacement fob online. Smart thinking, except it was sitting on his kitchen counter doing nothing because it hadn't been registered to the vehicle.
I pulled up, popped the hood on my service van, and got to work. First thing I did was check the battery in his original fob. CR2032, which is correct for this vehicle, but it was reading low and had a little corrosion on one contact. I cleaned it, seated a fresh cell, and retested. The fob woke back up but range was still inconsistent, which told me the fob itself had probably taken some damage over time. Not unusual on a vehicle this age.
So we used the fob he'd already bought online and registered it through the OBD port using my JLR-capable diagnostic equipment. The pairing process on this generation has a timed sequence built into the security module, so you wait it out. You don't rush it.
Once it paired, I walked the vehicle. Lock, unlock, every button, the tailgate, then verified the engine started clean with no warning lights. His original fob got erased from the system so it couldn't be used to start the car if it ever turned up in the wrong hands.
He mentioned the dealer had told him to bring the Discovery in, leave it for a couple days, and expect a significant bill. He said he saved a good chunk just by calling me first, and he didn't have to arrange a tow or a loaner.
