I had a call come in from a guy parked near the commercial corridor in Otay Mesa West. He had a 2008 LR3 and his only flip key had stopped working at some point during his shift. The blade still came out, the door opened manually, but when he got in and tried to start it, nothing. The vehicle security system was not seeing the key at all.
He had already tried holding the fob closer to the ignition. He had already sat there for a few minutes cycling the ignition hoping it would reset. Neither thing worked, which is pretty much the standard sequence of denial before someone calls me.
I got there with the van, pulled the OBD equipment, and got into the vehicle system to see what was going on. The key was not enrolled. Somewhere along the line, the pairing between the fob's transponder side and the vehicle had dropped. The remote buttons had probably been working intermittently for a while on the RF side, which is a separate signal, but the transponder piece had quit being recognized without him noticing until it mattered.
Cut a replacement blade to the vehicle, enrolled the transponder through the diagnostic port, tested the remote functions, and walked the whole fob. Lock, unlock, blade action, ignition start. All of it worked before I packed up.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait time that made no sense for someone who needed their vehicle the same day. I did not press on that. The job was done in Otay Mesa West, and he drove away without calling a tow truck.
