How Pontiac G6 Key Systems Changed Over the Years
Pass-Key III Transponder
The 2005 and 2006 G6 uses a Texas 4D transponder chip, also called ID45, talking to GM's Pass-Key III immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. Three-button remote, standard blade, chip embedded in the plastic key head. Programming runs on-board (no dealer scan tool required) which is why these are still some of the friendliest GM cars to key.
ID46 Chip with Passlock
GM switched your 2007 or 2008 G6 to an ID46 chip inside a remote head key. The remote and transponder are now built into one unit rather than a separate fob. Your immobilizer system is Passlock, and programming requires OBD-II access, which means we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and write the key to your car's computer.
Passlock II Security Upgrade
The 2009 and 2010 G6 still uses the ID46 chip inside a remote-head key, but GM bumped the immobilizer flavor to Passlock II. Same three buttons, same standard blade, same CR2032 battery. Marco handles these curbside with the Autel IM608, no tow to a dealer needed.
Which Key Does Your G6 Use?
A traditional key with a chip hidden inside the plastic key head. The remote fob is separate from the key itself.
Lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built right into the key head. One piece does everything, with the transponder chip integrated into the same housing as the remote.
The same integrated remote-head design as the 2007-2008 cars, paired with the upgraded Passlock II immobilizer instead of the original PK3+.
The Real Cost of a Pontiac G6 Key
Every price includes the key blank, precision cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location. Done on-site anywhere in San Diego County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. San Diego Pontiac Dealers
Roughly half the Mission Valley dealer ticket from when Pontiac was alive, no tow, and Marco actually carries both Texas 4D and ID46 transponders the dealer parts counter has been backordered on for over a decade.
Common Pontiac G6 Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
First diagnostic on a G6 no-start: Transponder in the key head. On 2005-2010 G6s the Texas 4D and ID46 chips degrade with age, after years in a California glovebox. Car cranks but never fires, security light solid. Marco tests with Autel IM608, isolates key vs BCM, programs a fresh transponder.
Passlock Sensor Malfunction - San Diego
Owners blame the key when the culprit is the Passlock sensor inside the ignition cylinder. It reads a signal and tells the computer it is okay to start. Failure: G6 goes into theft mode and will not crank. Marco sees this constantly on 2007-2010 models. Fix is sensor replacement or bypass; Marco diagnoses on-site.
Remote Fob Battery Drain - San Diego
Remote buttons stop working but the key starts. a dead CR2032. Pop the fob open with a coin, swap positive side up. If buttons still do not respond, corrosion on the contacts is next. Marco cracks the housing, cleans contacts, back to working remote-lock in 10 minutes in SD.
Key Blade Wear - San Diego
The standard blade on 2009-2010 G6 keys wears down faster than expected. Years of turning the ignition and door cylinder grind the cuts until the key barely catches the tumblers. Eventually it will not turn, and you are stranded. Marco cuts a fresh blade from the car's lock code, not from a worn key, so the new one works like day one.
Can You Program a G6 Key Yourself?
Yes, you can program a key yourself on 2005-2006 models using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure. You will need a pre-cut transponder key, then cycle the ignition through three 10-minute-and-30-second ON cycles. The whole process takes roughly 30 minutes. Keep in mind this erases all previously programmed keys. If you already have a working key, the add-key procedure takes under a minute.
Same 30-minute relearn works on 2007-2008 G6s. If you already have one programmed key, the add-key procedure takes well under a minute. For all-keys-lost the on-board relearn is the DIY option, but the blade must be properly cut first. If the relearn fails, OBD-II programming with a proper diagnostic is the backup.
Same deal as 2007-2008. The on-board relearn works, but Passlock II is pickier about timing. If the security light will not cooperate after multiple attempts, the ECM may need a professional reset. Marco handles those curbside with the Autel IM608 anywhere in San Diego County.

Did You Know?
The G6 had a starring role in 2007's Transformers as the unmarked agent's car, but the better trivia is what is under the skin: GM's Epsilon platform shared with the Chevrolet Malibu and Saturn Aura. The 2005-2006 cars use Pass-Key III with a Texas 4D transponder, then GM bumped 2007-2008 to the ID46 chip inside an integrated remote-head key, then 2009-2010 carried the same ID46 hardware forward but switched the immobilizer flavor to Passlock II. Three different security architectures in one nameplate. Marco still sees all three flavors come through Rancho Santa Fe and Ramona regularly.
