2008 Pontiac G6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do you need my VIN or anything from the dealer to make a replacement key for my G6?

I work from the VIN and from reading the lock directly. No dealer trip needed on your end. For an all-keys-lost job, the VIN helps confirm vehicle data going into the programming sequence. Proof of ownership is something I do verify on site before any work starts, which is standard practice and required under California locksmith law. Have your registration or title ready and we're good to go.

Q: Is EZ Car Keyz licensed to do this kind of security work in California?

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, fully insured, and bonded. We're also BBB A+ rated and part of Google's Guaranteed program, which you can verify directly through Google. Automotive transponder and immobilizer work falls under the locksmith license category in California, and we operate fully within that framework. You're not handing your car over to someone working out of a personal vehicle with no credentials.

Q: My 2008 G6 starts for a second and then immediately stalls. Could this be a key or immobilizer problem?

That start-then-stall pattern is a classic sign that the immobilizer didn't accept the key. The engine management gets a signal to start, fires briefly, and then the security system cuts it off because it didn't get a valid transponder read. A few things cause this. A key that was cut correctly but never had the chip enrolled will do it every time. A worn or damaged transponder chip inside an otherwise working key can do it intermittently.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online for my G6. Can you just program it, or is there a problem with that?

Bring it and I'll check it. Some aftermarket blanks for this generation are fine. Others have a chip that isn't compatible, or no chip at all, and won't program no matter what tools you throw at them. If the blank checks out, I can cut and program it. If it doesn't, I have blanks in the van that I know work. Either way you're not stuck.

2008 Pontiac G6 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Lomas Santa Fe on a Tuesday afternoon. A guy had been driving his 2008 G6 all week, went to leave for lunch, and the key was just gone. Not in the house, not in a jacket pocket. Gone. He had no spare.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to have it towed in, said they'd need to order parts to VIN, and that he was looking at several business days minimum before he'd have the car back. He lived maybe two blocks from where it was parked. That math didn't work for him.

I pulled up with the van and got into the diagnostics. All-keys-lost on the G6 is a defined procedure through the OBD port. I decoded the lock profile, cut a new key to match, then ran the programming sequence to enroll the transponder chip. The immobilizer accepted it on the first try.

He turned the key, it fired up, and he sat there for a second like he was waiting for it to stall. It didn't.

Total time on site was under 40 minutes. He made his lunch. The dealer option would have meant a tow bill plus days without the car, and it would have cost him a lot more on top of that.

I didn't make a big deal of it. He knew what he saved.

Pontiac G6 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2008 Pontiac G6 transponder key have a remote built in, or is it just a chip key?▼

It depends on what you had originally. The G6 came with a basic transponder key for some configurations, and a separate key-plus-remote combo for others, where the remote fob is a separate piece, not built into the key head. The transponder key itself has no buttons and no battery. It just has a chip in the plastic head that talks to the immobilizer when you turn the ignition.
