2009 Pontiac G6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement transponder key last?

A long time, if it's cut and programmed correctly from the start. The programming itself doesn't degrade or expire. What does wear out eventually is the key blade -- if it's on a heavy keyring getting yanked around daily, the blade can wear to the point where the ignition cylinder gets finicky. The transponder chip inside the key head is passive, no battery, nothing to replace. Treat the blade reasonably and it'll outlast the car.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Our work is covered under warranty. That said, when a properly programmed transponder key suddenly stops working on a 2009 G6, the first thing to check is the vehicle's own battery. A low or failing vehicle battery can cause the immobilizer system to behave erratically -- it may not read the key correctly even though nothing is actually wrong with the key itself.

Q: I only have one key left for my G6. What happens if I lose it?

All-keys-lost on a 2009 G6 is a harder job than adding a spare when you still have a working key. Without a working key present, I have to access the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, clear the existing key memory, and register the new key from scratch. It takes longer and costs more than a simple add-a-key job.

Q: My G6 cranks but immediately stalls. Could it be the key?

Yes, and that specific symptom -- cranks, fires briefly, then dies -- is the classic sign that the immobilizer didn't read the transponder chip. Could be a damaged chip inside the key head, a key that lost its programming, or a fault in the immobilizer system itself. Before you let anyone replace fuel pumps or injectors, get the key and immobilizer checked.

2009 Pontiac G6 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Bancroft in Spring Valley on a Tuesday morning. Guy had one working key, wanted a spare cut and programmed before something happened to the original. Smart move -- the kind of job I wish more people called about before they were stranded.

He met me at the curb. The G6 was sitting in the driveway, started right up on the first key, no complaints. Easy baseline.

I decoded the existing key blade, cut a new one to match, and verified the cut before anything else. Then came the programming. The 2009 G6 immobilizer needs the new transponder chip to be introduced to the vehicle through the diagnostic port. No ignition-turn dance, no button sequence -- you need the right equipment talking to the right module. I was in, chip registered, and both keys tested hot in under 25 minutes.

He tried the spare himself, turned it over, watched it idle. Then he just nodded. That's usually how it goes with the spare-key jobs. No drama. Just done.

He mentioned he'd priced it at the dealer a few months back and had put it off because of what they quoted. He didn't say it like a complaint, more like he was finally checking a box he'd been avoiding. I keep my pricing where people don't put it off. Call for what that looks like.

Pontiac G6 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys?▼

We use quality blanks that are spec-matched to the 2009 Pontiac G6 -- the right transponder chip type and the right blade profile for this vehicle. The immobilizer on this car isn't going to accept a blank with the wrong chip inside, so starting with a verified, compatible blank isn't optional. It's how we avoid wasting your time on a key that won't program.
