How Pontiac G8 Keys Work
G8 Base (V6) - San Diego
GM brought the Holden Commodore platform to the States and kept the PK3 (Pass-Key III+) immobilizer system intact. Your Base model uses a Philips ID46 transponder chip inside a 4 or 5-button flip key (FCC OUC6000083) with a laser-cut blade. Marco programs it through the OBD-II port behind the dash, which means no dealer appointment and no tow.
G8 GT (V8) - San Diego
The GT stepped up to a 6.0L V8 but kept the exact same key system as the Base. Same Philips ID46 chip, same PK3+ immobilizer, same 4-5 button flip key (FCC OUC6000083) with a CR2032 battery. The only thing that changed was the engine; the security hardware stayed put. That makes our job straightforward whether you are in Chula Vista or La Jolla.
G8 GXP (6.2L V8) - San Diego
Pontiac's final performance statement. The GXP got the 6.2L LS3 and a six-speed manual option, but the key and immobilizer are identical to the GT. Philips ID46 transponder, PK3+ system, OBD-II programming. The ECM calibration is different for the GXP, so Marco verifies that before we start programming. Same visit, same result.
Which Key Does Your G8 Use?
A 4 or 5-button flip key (FCC OUC6000083) with a laser-cut blade that swings out from the fob body and a Philips ID46 transponder chip. The chip talks to your car's computer to let it start.
Identical flip key as the Base with lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, and (on the 5-button) panic buttons. The Philips ID46 chip inside is what actually lets the engine start.
Identical flip key to the GT. Four or five buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, optional panic), laser-cut blade, CR2032 battery. The GXP's extra horsepower does not change the key hardware at all.
How Much Does a Pontiac G8 Key Cost?
Price includes key cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $105 to $145. Done on-site anywhere in San Diego County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. San Diego Pontiac Dealers
A fraction of what a Cadillac/GMC dealer service writer will quote you for a G8 key today (most will not even attempt the Holden-sourced part), no tow, and Marco actually stocks the OUC6000083 fob shells and ID46 transponders the dealer parts counter has not seen in over a decade.
Common Pontiac G8 Key Problems
ID46 Transponder Failure
Philips ID46 in the Holden-sourced G8 flip key degrades with age. Security light solid, engine cranks but never fires. Marco confirms with Autel IM608, isolates chip vs PK3+ in the BCM, programs a fresh ID46 in San Diego.
Remote Battery Drain
Remote keeps dying even with a fresh CR2032? If you use factory remote start frequently, the fob draws more power than normal and burns through batteries quick. Swap the battery first. If it keeps happening, the remote board may need reprogramming, which Marco handles on-site in El Cajon.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Owners assume a dead battery killed their key. It did not. The ECM lost sync with your transponder when the battery was disconnected or went flat. The key is fine. Marco reconnects with a scan tool relearn in San Diego, back in business in about 15 minutes.
Ignition Tumbler Wear
Before recommending a new key, Marco checks the ignition cylinder. The V8 G8 models (GT and GXP) put more vibration through the steering column, wearing the tumbler faster than expected. If the key is hard to turn or sticks, the cylinder may need service. Marco diagnoses on-site first.
Can You Program a G8 Key Yourself?
When you have lost every key, the G8 does support a 10-minute relearn procedure. You cycle the ignition to ON for exactly 10 minutes and 30 seconds, three times in a row, with tight timing between cycles. It works, but you need a pre-cut flip key with the correct Philips ID46 chip already in it. One timing mistake and you start over.
When you still have a working key, adding a spare is simpler. slot your working key, turn to ON, remove it, then slot the new key within 10 seconds and turn to ON. The new key must already be cut to match and have the right transponder chip. If the timing window passes, you have to start over.

Did You Know?
The G8 is technically an Australian car. GM took the Holden Commodore VE, slapped Pontiac badges on the front and rear, and shipped it from the Elizabeth assembly plant near Adelaide straight to U.S. dealers. The PK3+ immobilizer and Philips ID46 transponder system came over from the Holden as well, which means a properly equipped locksmith can still source replacement parts through the Australian aftermarket years after the U.S. dealer parts counters gave up. One of the last great rear-drive American sedans, except it was not really American. Pontiac shut down in 2010 anyway. Marco still sees one or two roll through Ramona and Carmel Valley every month.
