2008 Pontiac G8
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can I find a replacement key for my 2008 Pontiac G8 at a regular GM dealer?

Technically yes, but in practice it's complicated. Pontiac was discontinued in 2010, and dedicated Pontiac service dried up fast after that. Some GM dealers can still source a replacement key through their parts system, but availability varies and the wait can stretch out. Beyond sourcing the key, the dealer still has to program it, which means a service appointment, a possible tow if you have no working key, and a bill that reflects dealer labor rates.

Q: Is EZ Car Keyz licensed to work on vehicle security systems in California?

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), bonded, and fully insured. We're BBB A+ rated and part of the Google Guaranteed program, which you can verify directly. When you hand someone the keys to your car and access to the OBD port, you want to know they're the real deal. We are.

Q: What happens if I lose both keys to my 2008 Pontiac G8 and have nothing left?

All-keys-lost on the G8 is a job we handle regularly. When there's no working key to reference, the process involves accessing the vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port, clearing the existing key memory, and registering the new key from scratch. It takes a little longer than adding a spare to an already-working system, but it's fully doable on site without a tow.

Q: My G8 starts fine but then stalls immediately after I got a new key. Is the key bad?

That start-and-stall pattern points directly to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip in the key. The engine fires on the mechanical ignition signal, then the security system cuts fuel or spark within seconds because the chip didn't clear. It's not a bad key blank. It's an unprogrammed or incorrectly programmed one. If someone cut the blade but skipped the chip programming, this is exactly what you get.

2008 Pontiac G8 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Scripps Ranch who had one key left for his G8, and it had been through some damage. The blade was worn down and the key was starting to give him grief in the ignition, sticking a little and feeling rough. He wanted a spare before things got worse. Smart call.

When I pulled up, he was in the driveway, and the G8 was sitting right there. Clean car. He mentioned a Pontiac dealer had closed years ago and the GM dealer nearby quoted him a wait and a price that made him put it off for months.

I decoded the existing working key, cut a new blank to match, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port on site. The whole thing took maybe twenty-five minutes. I handed him the new key, he turned it over in his hand, and we did a full test together. It started clean, no hesitation, no stall.

He said he wished he hadn't waited so long. The dealer wait and cost were just background noise at that point. He had a working spare in his hand, standing in his own driveway in Scripps Ranch, and that was the whole job.

Pontiac G8 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My 2008 Pontiac G8 key cut a new key at a hardware store but the car won't start. What happened?▼

This is a very common situation with the G8. The blade might be cut correctly, but without programming the transponder chip inside the key head to match your vehicle's immobilizer, the car will crank and immediately stall. The immobilizer reads the chip every time you turn the key and won't allow the engine to keep running if the chip isn't recognized. Hardware stores and big-box key kiosks cut the blade only. They have no way to program the transponder.
