Cobalt Key Tech Through the Years
1st Generation (Early)
Standard transponder key with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7936) chip inside the head. Your Cobalt's PK3+ immobilizer reads that chip every ignition turn. Chip not matching means the engine will not start, even though the blade turns the cylinder fine.
1st Generation (Mid)
Mid-cycle Cobalt (2006-2008) kept the same PK3+ Philips Crypto 2 chip and added optional remote-head keys on higher trims. Chip handshake stayed identical; the remote just folded into the key head.
1st Generation (Late)
Late Cobalt (2009-2010) carried the same PK3+ system right through to the end of production. SS turbo and base 2.2 LS used the same key, same chip, same OBD-only programming workflow.
Identify Your Cobalt Key
Plastic head fused to a high-security blade. Philips Crypto 2 PK3+ chip molded inside the head. Cobalt LS, LT, base trim, all of them.
Same style as the earlier Cobalts. Standard blade, Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip, 3-button remote. SS owners run the same key as the base trim.
SS or LTZ-spec remote-head key. PK3+ chip in the head, 3 or 4 buttons (lock, unlock, panic, optional trunk), CR2032 inside.

Cobalt Problems We Fix Most
Crank-No-Start with the Security Light Lit
Classic PK3+ desync. Engine spins, fuel never delivers, security light glares. Usually the BCM lost the chip handshake after a low-voltage event or the cylinder is shedding contact pressure. We diagnose curbside, recode the chip or swap the cylinder.
Immobilizer Loses Sync
Cobalt cylinders past 100K can shed wafer pressure and refuse to turn or read the PK3+ chip cleanly. Symptoms: intermittent no-start, key catching, eventual failure. We replace on-site, recode to the existing key, you skip the dealer keyfit charge.
Ignition Cylinder Worn Out
NHTSA recall 14V-047 covers the famous Cobalt ignition switch problem: switch slips out of RUN under knee-bump or heavy keychain, kills airbags and assist. If your cylinder feels loose or has been recalled, we install the upgraded switch and recode curbside.
Cobalt DIY: Reality Check
For the fob buttons (lock, unlock, panic), 2005-2010 Cobalts support on-board sync via the door switch sequence. The PK3+ chip pairing itself is OBD-scanner-only, no on-board trick exists for it on this platform.
Spare-key path on the Cobalt: with one working PK3+ key already in your hand, the BCM can be talked into accepting a second cloned chip through the OBD port in about 15 minutes. No on-board ignition-cycle trick exists for this generation. Real scanner required, period.
Remote buttons pair separately. Close all doors, press and hold lock and unlock on the driver door panel simultaneously for 6 seconds, then release. Lock and unlock functions only; the transponder chip still needs to be programmed separately.

Interesting Cobalt detail: the SS variant pushing 260+ horsepower out of the supercharged 2.0L Ecotec ran the exact same PASS-Key III+ immobilizer hardware as the base-trim 155-horse commuter. GM did not bother upgrading the security electronics for the performance car, so the same Philips Crypto 2 chip protected a $14K econobox and one of the quickest front-drive cars of its era.
