Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does my 2007 Cobalt need one?

The key for your Cobalt has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the antenna ring around the cylinder reads that chip. If the code checks out, the immobilizer clears and the engine is allowed to run. If the chip is absent, unprogrammed, or programmed to a different car, the engine won't stay running, even if the key blade is cut perfectly.

The key and the reader have to communicate cleanly every single time, and worn ignition cylinders on higher-mileage Cobalts can cause that signal to drop out inconsistently.

Q: Can I use a key I bought online if I bring it to you?

Sometimes, with a caveat. If the blank you bought is a legitimate transponder blank compatible with your Cobalt's immobilizer, I can cut and program it. But a lot of what gets sold online is either the wrong blank entirely or a low-quality chip that programs inconsistently. If the key you bring doesn't take the programming reliably, we're starting over with a blank I know is correct. Easiest path is usually to just let me supply the key.

I got a call from a guy in Fairbanks Ranch, over in Rancho Santa Fe, who had snapped his only key off in the door lock. Not the ignition, the door.
