Three things to watch for. First, they can't give you a firm total price for your specific vehicle on the phone. A real locksmith knows what a 2007 Cobalt transponder key job costs before they pull out of the driveway. Second, they show up and either don't have the right programming equipment for GM or start stalling and making excuses. Third, the price jumps once they're already in your driveway, with add-ons for programming, security relearn, or some invented licensing fee. That third one is the classic move because they know you're stuck.

One total price, stated before the job starts. That's the standard. If you're not getting that, keep calling.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does my 2007 Cobalt need one?

The key for your Cobalt has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the antenna ring around the cylinder reads that chip. If the code checks out, the immobilizer clears and the engine is allowed to run. If the chip is absent, unprogrammed, or programmed to a different car, the engine won't stay running, even if the key blade is cut perfectly.

This is why a blank key cut at a hardware store won't work as anything more than a door key. The blade might turn the cylinder, but the car will die within seconds. There are no buttons on this key, no remote functions. It's a turn-key ignition setup, and the chip is the part that makes it a legitimate replacement rather than just a metal copy.

What tools do you actually use to program a Cobalt key?

Professional GM-capable diagnostic and programming equipment. For the 2007 Cobalt, the programming process works through the vehicle's data port, and the tool needs to communicate with the immobilizer to register the new transponder. There's also an onboard relearn sequence that exists for some scenarios when a working key is already present, but all-keys-lost situations require the right external tool to get back in without a working key to start from.

My Cobalt starts fine sometimes and other times the security light comes on and it won't start. Is the key failing?

That intermittent pattern, starts okay one time, security light on and no-start the next, is a known headache on these cars. It could be the transponder chip in the key degrading, but it could also be the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder losing contact or the ignition switch itself getting worn. The key and the reader have to communicate cleanly every single time, and worn ignition cylinders on higher-mileage Cobalts can cause that signal to drop out inconsistently.

Don't assume it's just the key until someone checks both sides of the equation. If your spare key does the same thing, the antenna or ignition side is the more likely culprit.

Can I use a key I bought online if I bring it to you?

Sometimes, with a caveat. If the blank you bought is a legitimate transponder blank compatible with your Cobalt's immobilizer, I can cut and program it. But a lot of what gets sold online is either the wrong blank entirely or a low-quality chip that programs inconsistently. If the key you bring doesn't take the programming reliably, we're starting over with a blank I know is correct. Easiest path is usually to just let me supply the key. Either way, call ahead and tell me what you bought so we're not guessing in your driveway.
