2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday night near Ramona Highlands, a couple came out of the bowling alley to a Cobalt that cranked and immediately died. They tried it three more times. Same thing every time. Cranks fine, fires briefly, then stalls. No warning light that meant anything obvious to them.

They figured the car was sick, not the key. One of them called me thinking it might be fuel-related.

I asked two questions: was the key a copy or the original, and had they recently had a spare made. The answer was yes, they had a spare cut at a hardware store a few months back and started using it regularly after the original got bent. Hardware store cut, no chip programming. Just a blade.

That was it. The blade fit the cylinder well enough to turn the ignition, but the transponder chip inside was never enrolled to the car's immobilizer. Engine fires on the mechanical signal, immobilizer cuts it almost immediately. Looks exactly like a fuel or engine problem if you don't know what you're looking for.

I had the right key blank in the van, cut it to the vehicle right there in the parking lot, programmed the transponder, and handed it over. First crank, full start, no stall.

They drove home that night. The dealer was never part of the conversation, and they saved a good chunk compared to what that route would have cost them, plus the wait.
