Impala Keys Across 25 Years
6th Gen (B-body)
Security stayed simple here. Your 1995 or 1996 Impala uses a purely mechanical key with no chip, no transponder, and no electronic security at all. Simple metal key cut on the spot, nothing to program.
7th Gen (W-body)
GM rolled out Passlock on the W-body Impala starting in 2000. Your key is a plain metal blade with no transponder chip. Security lives in the lock cylinder, where a Hall-effect sensor reads a coded magnet as the key turns. We code-cut and run a 10-minute Passlock relearn when needed.
8th Gen (W-body Refresh)
Remote head key with the buttons built right into the key instead of a separate fob. Uses a CR2032 battery and a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip with GM's PK3+ immobilizer. On-board programming with a working key, or PIN-based all-keys-lost through OBD-II.
10th Gen (Epsilon II)
Security got serious for real. Your Impala switched to a smart proximity key with a laser-cut blade and push-button start on LTZ and Premier trims. Programming requires server authentication through GM's network. No DIY option here, but we handle it on-site with our Autel IM608 and the proper server access.
Identify Your Impala Key
Plain metal key with no chip and no buttons. We cut it on the spot from your door or ignition code. Simple as it gets.
2000-2005 Impala PassLock key: bare metal blade or plastic-head remote, no chip. PassLock lives in the cylinder.
2006-2013 Impala PK3+ remote-head: plastic head with Philips Crypto 2 chip molded inside, 3-4 buttons, CR2032.
Proximity fob with push-button start and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside. Stays in your pocket to unlock and start the car.
What to Expect Price-Wise

Impala Problems We Fix Most
PassLock Drift on 2000-2005 Impala
Hall-effect sensor inside the cylinder drifts under heat, BCM pulls fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, swap cylinder or PassLock-bypass on-site, you keep driving.
Fob Battery Burn (2006-2013)
Impala cylinders past 100K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. Symptoms: intermittent no-start, key catching, eventual full failure. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to the existing key.
Smart Key Authentication Failures (2014-2020)
10th-gen Impala proximity fobs lose pairing to the BCM after firmware updates. Push-start fails, fob not detected. We rerun the BCM pairing curbside.
Mechanical Key Wear (1994-1996)
Owners think the ignition is failing when the culprit is a worn key. The 6th gen B-body Impala has no electronic security, so the mechanical key and cylinder do all the work. We cut a fresh key from the original code, not from your worn copy.
Impala DIY: What Works By Generation
2000-2005 PassLock Impala accepts the 30-minute on-board BCM relearn with one working key. Hands-off, no scanner, just patience.
2006-2013 PK3+ Impala chip pairing is OBD-scanner-only. No on-board key learn trick exists for the chip itself. Fob buttons resync on-board after battery change.
2014-2020 Impala Hitag2 needs scanner programming for any new chipped key. Proximity fobs on higher trims need SPS PIN for all-keys-lost.
No DIY option. The proximity key system requires GM server authentication and pro programming tools. Dial (619) 876-1271 and we handle it on-site.

Impala SS Trivia
Strange Impala SS detail: the 1995 model that revived the Super Sport name after a 27-year hiatus packed a 260 hp 5.7L LT1 V8 and instantly became a lowrider and street-racing icon, yet it rolled off the line with completely mechanical keys and zero electronic immobilizer. Classic muscle, classic ignition cylinder, no chip. Sometimes the icons keep it dead simple.
