1996 Chevrolet Impala
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I lost all my keys. Can a locksmith still make a key with nothing to start from?

Yes, and it is a common call on older vehicles like this one. With no key at all, the lock cylinders themselves become the source. A locksmith can decode the tumblers directly from the door lock or ignition cylinder and cut a key to match. On a 1996 Impala this is a well-practiced process. No special data access, no factory security reset, no countdown timers. Just mechanical work.

Q: Are aftermarket keys fine for this car, or do I need an OEM key blank?

Aftermarket blanks work fine here. The 1996 Impala takes a standard key blank that has been in wide circulation for decades. The only thing that matters is that the blank fits the keyway and accepts a clean cut. We use quality blanks from professional suppliers, not the grab-bag stuff you find on a discount site. On a mechanical key this old, blank quality is mostly about the metal hardness and how well it holds the cut over time.

Q: My door lock and ignition take different keys. Is that normal on a '96 Impala?

Not from the factory. GM originally keyed the door and ignition to match on these cars. But after 30 years, there is a real chance a previous owner had a cylinder replaced, a lockout job done by someone who re-pinned only one lock, or wear that developed unevenly. If your door and ignition currently need different cuts, that is a years-of-life thing, not a factory design.

Q: My key turns hard and feels gritty. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Start with a new key cut from a fresh decode. A worn key drags against the tumblers and feels exactly like a failing cylinder, but the problem is usually the key itself. Spray a little dry graphite into the cylinder first, try the worn key, then try a freshly cut one. If the new key turns cleanly, the cylinder is fine.

1996 Chevrolet Impala Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Otay Mesa, near the Nestor side, a woman called about her 1996 Chevrolet Impala. She had been using the same key since she bought the car years back, and one day it just stopped turning in the door lock. Tried the ignition. Same thing. The key wasn't broken, just worn down enough that it was no longer reading the tumblers cleanly.

She had no spare.

I pulled up to her carport, looked at the key, and you could see the wear pattern. The peaks had rounded off just enough to cause problems. I decoded her door lock cylinder to get the correct biting, cut a fresh key on the spot, and tested it in the door, the ignition, and the trunk. Everything turned the first try.

The whole stop was under 20 minutes. She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her the dealer would have needed the VIN, possibly proof of ownership, and a wait for a key to be cut and mailed or ordered. She had the car back in her hands before any of that process would have even started.

If your key is getting stubborn, that worn blade is usually the story.

Chevrolet Impala Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 1996 Chevrolet Impala?▼

Call a mobile locksmith. This key is purely mechanical, so there is no programming fee, no dealer software, and no diagnostic charge. The job is just cutting a key to fit your locks. A mobile locksmith comes to you, decodes the cut on-site, and hands you a working key without a tow, a dealer appointment, or a wait. You pay a fraction of what a dealer visit costs, and the dealer does not have any special advantage here.
