I got a call from a body shop over in La Mesa Village. They had a 2015 Impala sitting in their lot, owner needed a key replacement, and they had already brought in another locksmith to handle it. That locksmith got partway through the programming sequence, hit a fault, and left. The car was now throwing a vehicle security system warning on the dash and would not start at all.
The body shop was apologetic about it. They said the first guy packed up fast and told them to tow it to the dealer. The owner was looking at flatbed fees plus a multi-day dealer wait, and the shop wanted to see if there was another option before making that call.
I loaded the bench tools before I left, because a failed programming attempt mid-sequence can put the body control module into a fault state that the OBD port alone won't get you out of. That's not a rumor -- it happens when power gets interrupted or the sequence gets abandoned partway through, and the module is left holding partial security data it doesn't know what to do with.
When I got there, the OBD port was effectively locked out by the incomplete session from the previous attempt. I pulled the BCM, read the security data directly off the chip using the bench setup, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the security handshake from the ground up. Once the module was back to a clean state, I came back in through the OBD port the normal way, enrolled the new fob, and confirmed the security warning was gone.
The whole thing took about an hour and a half. Longer than a standard flip key job, but it got done on-site, same day. The owner never had to arrange a flatbed. The body shop said they'd know to call me first next time.
