2002 Chevrolet Impala
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than the Chevrolet dealer for a 2002 Impala key?

Almost always, yes. And on a 2002 Impala specifically, the gap is wider than people expect. This is a mechanical key job with no programming involved, so dealer overhead and diagnostic fees don't make sense here. You're paying for a cut key and the service call, not a shop visit. We save most Impala owners a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and we do it in your driveway.

Q: Does your price include cutting and everything else I need?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, testing it in the door and ignition, and the mobile service to your location in Coronado. There's nothing to add on. The 2002 Impala doesn't require a separate programming step, so there are no layered charges the way you'd see on a newer vehicle with a fob or push-button start.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made without the original, or do I need to bring the car somewhere?

You don't need the original and you don't need to tow anything. On a 2002 Impala, a locksmith can decode the existing lock cylinder right at the car to determine the correct cut, then make a working key from scratch. As long as the lock isn't damaged, all-keys-lost on this vehicle is a curbside job. I come to you in the Naval Base Area, decode the lock, cut the key, and you're done on the spot.

Q: My 2002 Impala key turns but the car won't start. Is this a key problem?

If the key turns freely in the ignition but the car won't start, the key itself is probably fine. On a 2002 Impala with a mechanical key, the ignition cylinder can wear over time and get sloppy, especially on high-mileage vehicles. A worn cylinder might turn without fully engaging the switch. That's a lock or ignition cylinder issue, not a key-cutting problem. Worth checking whether the key feels loose or requires wiggling before the car responds.

2002 Chevrolet Impala Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to the Naval Base Area in Coronado on a weeknight. A guy had lost his only key to a 2002 Impala sitting in the driveway. He'd already called the dealer and got quoted a wait time plus a tow if he needed it brought in. He figured it was going to be a whole ordeal.

It wasn't.

I showed up with my key cutting equipment and decoded the lock right there in the driveway. Cut a new blade to his vehicle, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes.

He stood there for a second like he was waiting for the next step. There wasn't one. The key worked, the car started, we were done.

He mentioned what the dealer had quoted. I told him what he owed me. He appreciated the difference. Then I drove off and he went inside.

Chevrolet Impala Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2002 Chevrolet Impala key replacement cost?▼

Call us for exact pricing, but replacing a key on a 2002 Impala is one of the more affordable key jobs out there. There's no fob, no chip programming, and no diagnostic equipment involved. It's a metal key cut to your vehicle. The dealer charges for parts, labor, and shop time even on a basic job like this.
