Chevrolet Spark Keys Through the Years
Basic Transponder Key
Security is straightforward on these early Sparks. Your key is a simple transponder blade with a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7937A) chip inside, no remote buttons, no fob battery to worry about. The PK3+ immobilizer reads the chip through the ignition cylinder, and we program it through your OBD-II port in about 15 minutes.
Remote Head Key Arrives
Chevrolet added an integrated remote head key on higher trims, giving you lock, unlock, and trunk buttons baked right into the key. Chip is still a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46, PCF7937A) running PK3+, so the security side did not change. Big difference for you is a CR2032 battery inside the fob housing that you will need to replace every couple of years.
Enhanced Passlock Era
Security got a small bump here. Your Spark continues with a Hitag 2 Extended (ID46E) chip, which tightened up the encryption compared to earlier years. Programming still goes through OBD-II, and on-board procedures work for adding keys when you have a working one. We read the PIN with our Autel IM608 and handle the whole thing on-site.
Identify Your Spark Key
2013-2015 Spark Passlock II key: bare metal blade or plastic-head remote, no chip in the blade.
2016+ Spark PK3+ Hitag2 remote-head: plastic head with chip molded in, 3-4 buttons, CR2032.
Spark proximity smart fob (top trim option): hidden valet blade tucks inside, push-button start, Hitag2 chip.

Chevrolet Spark Problems We Fix Most
Spark Passlock II Drift
Hall-effect sensor inside the 2013-2015 cylinder drifts, BCM pulls fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, cylinder-swap or Passlock-bypass on-site.
Transponder Chip Sync Drop
Spark cylinders past 80K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to existing keys.
Fob Battery Burn
Spark fobs lose BCM pairing after firmware updates. We rerun the pairing curbside with the proper scanner.
Immobilizer ECM Glitch
2019-2022 Spark owners blame the key when the real problem is an ECM glitch from a weak battery. Security system locks you out randomly, and a new key will not fix it. The fix is a 30-minute OBD-II relearn that resets the immobilizer.
Spark DIY by Year
2013-2015 Spark Passlock II: 30-minute on-board BCM relearn works with one working key. Hands-off, no scanner.
2016+ Spark PK3+ Hitag2: OBD-scanner-only for chip pairing. Fob buttons resync on-board after battery change.
All-keys-lost on a 2016+ Spark needs SPS PIN sourcing. Marco has Techline access, so we handle the PIN ourselves and complete the job curbside.

Spark Passlock II Trivia
Quiet Spark trivia: the early Passlock II setup, inherited from GM economy cars, uses resistive ignition cylinder sensors instead of RFID transponders. One of the last GM vehicles to ride that analog immobilizer tech. While the rest of the industry had moved to radio-frequency transponder chips years earlier, GM kept the resistor-based system alive in the Spark well into the 2010s.
