I got a call from a body shop off Spring Valley's Dictionary Hill area on a Tuesday afternoon. They had a 2016 Spark sitting in the lot, owner needed a replacement smart key, and another locksmith had already attempted the job and left.
The car was throwing a key-not-detected warning and a theft deterrent alert on the dash after the failed attempt. The other locksmith had packed up and told the body shop the car needed to go to the dealer.
The body shop called me because they did not want to deal with a flatbed and a multi-day dealer wait.
When I got there, the OBD port was effectively locked out for key programming purposes because the previous attempt had stalled mid-sequence and left the body control module in a fault state. That is the worst version of this job. A bad programming attempt that cuts off partway through can do that, and it turns a normal smart key replacement into something more involved.
I brought my bench-level diagnostic equipment specifically because situations like this come up. I was able to access the module's security data, clear the fault condition, and rebuild the security handshake before enrolling the new fob. Once the module came back clean, the new 5-button smart key paired on the first attempt. Theft deterrent warning gone.
The whole job ran about an hour and a half. Longer than a standard smart key replacement, but it finished same-day, on-site, no flatbed involved. I walked the body shop guys through what had gone wrong so they would know what to watch for if a customer ever came in asking about key work ahead of time.
The dealer alternative was a tow, probably two or three days of wait time, and a bill that would have been significantly higher. That math is not close.
