Programming requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to write the new key into the immobilizer memory.

My 2015 Spark starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Accepted Answer

Start with the CR2032 battery. A worn battery drops the remote range before it quits entirely, and some owners replace it and get full function back. Make sure the new battery seats flat and that the contacts inside the housing are not bent or corroded.

If a fresh CR2032 does not fix it, the remote side of the key may have lost its pairing or the fob housing could be damaged internally. The good news is the transponder chip and the remote are in the same unit but handled separately during programming, so diagnosing which side has the problem is not complicated. If the key still turns and starts the car, the transponder is fine and the issue is isolated to the remote pairing or the hardware itself.
