Your Lumina's Key System
Second Generation (W-Body)
Turns in the ignition like any other key, but there is a small metal pellet embedded in the blade. That pellet is a resistor, and it is one of 15 possible values ranging from about 400 ohms (0.4K) to 11.8K ohms. Resistance does not match what your ECM expects, the car will not start. No transponder chip, no computer programming. Just the right resistor value and a properly cut blade.
Identify Your Lumina Key
A standard metal key with a small resistor pellet visible on the blade. No buttons, no remote, no battery. The resistor value must match your car's ECM or the engine will not crank.
What a Lumina Key Costs
Pricing covers VATS blank, pellet match, cut, and the trip across San Diego County. Most Lumina jobs are under $135 total.
EZ vs. the Dealer
All keys lost on a Lumina? We handle it curbside. Dealer wants the car towed in.
Lumina Problems We Fix Most
Lumina VATS No-Start
Pellet worn beyond tolerance, cylinder contacts corroded, or a previous owner cut a non-VATS blank the cylinder cannot read. Cranks, no fuel, security light may flash. We ohm-meter the cylinder reading, cut a fresh VATS blank with the correct pellet value.
Worn Ignition Lock Cylinder
Owners assume the key is bad when the real problem is the cylinder. On high-mileage Luminas, wafers wear and the cylinder stops turning. We replace on-site with a compatible US161LT part and cut a fresh key in under an hour in Spring Valley or El Cajon.
Lost All Keys, VATS Reset Needed
Every key gone, but the ECM still remembers a specific resistor value. We read it from the system to know which of 15 resistance levels your Lumina needs. We cut a matched VATS key or install a bypass if the original module failed. No tow needed.
Lumina DIY: Almost Nothing
VATS pellet cannot be DIY-programmed. The pellet itself is a fixed-resistance physical part; the only "programming" is matching the right resistance value on the blank to what the cylinder expects. That needs an ohmmeter and the right blanks.

Lumina VATS Trivia
VATS, Vehicle Anti-Theft System, was GM's first widely deployed passive immobilizer. Debuted in 1985 on the Corvette using nothing more than a tiny resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. By the mid-1990s GM had pushed it across most of the lineup including the Lumina, with 15 possible resistance values from 0.5K to 11.8K ohms. Mechanically simple, electrically clever, and outlived plenty of more sophisticated systems.
