Trax Key Tech Through the Years
First Generation Launch
Remote head key with a laser-cut blade and three buttons: lock, unlock, and panic. Your 2015 or 2016 Trax uses a Philips Crypto 2 / Hitag 2 (ID46) transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer every ignition start. No push-button start here; you turn the key in the ignition, and the chip does the talking behind the scenes.
Mid-Cycle Refresh
Remote head key with the same laser-cut blade and three-button layout carried over from the earlier years. Transponder chip type remained consistent (Philips Crypto 2 / Hitag 2 ID46), and the immobilizer system stayed on the same Gamma Plus platform. Chevrolet updated the styling and tech inside the cabin, but the key system itself did not change in any meaningful way for this stretch.

Chevrolet updated the styling and tech inside the cabin, but the key system itself did not change in any meaningful way through the first generation's final 2023 year.
Second Generation Redesign
The redesigned 2024 Trax is a full second generation, not a refresh. Pick your trim and the key changes: higher trims run a proximity smart fob with push-to-start (HYQ4ES family, GM EXT chip, hidden laser-cut blade, CR2032), and the base trim gets a flip key with a switchblade-style blade. Either way, pairing one means GM SPS server authentication over OBD-II, which Marco's van carries pre-loaded for every San Diego County call.
Identify Your Trax Key
This is a single piece: the remote buttons and the key blade are built into one unit. You insert it into the ignition to start your Trax. The transponder chip inside talks to your car's immobilizer automatically.
Same style as the earlier Trax key. Three buttons, laser-cut blade, CR2032 battery. Key looks and works identically to the 2015-2016 version, and it programs the same way.

The redesigned 2024-2025 Trax puts this proximity fob on the higher trims, with push-to-start and pocket detection. HYQ4ES family, GM EXT chip, slim laser-cut blade tucked inside. Pairing one demands GM SPS server authentication over OBD-II, handled curbside on every San Diego County call.
Base-trim 2024-2025 Trax skips the proximity fob and runs a flip key: laser-cut blade that swings out of the fob housing, no push-to-start. Pairing still goes through GM SPS server authentication over OBD-II, the same as the smart-key trims.

Trax Problems We Fix Most
Trax No-Start with Security Light Lit
PK3+ chip lost sync to the BCM after deep voltage drop or ignition cylinder weakening. Engine spins, no fuel, security light glares. We diagnose curbside, recode the chip, swap the cylinder if needed, you keep driving.
Laser-Cut Blade Wear
Trax cylinders past 80K miles can shed wafer pressure and refuse to read the chip cleanly. We replace the cylinder on-site, recode to existing keys.
Immobilizer Compatibility Issues
Trax fob CR2032 dies and lock-unlock quit responding. Swap battery curbside, resync via door switch sequence, you are back in business.
Ignition Cylinder Binding (2015-2017 Recall)
Owners assume the key is worn when the ignition gets stiff. Real issue on 2015-2017 Trax is a known cylinder defect under NHTSA recall 17V414000. Cylinder binds and can prevent key removal or starting. Dealer handles the recall free; we cut a working key.
Trax DIY: What You Can Do
Fob buttons (lock, unlock, panic) resync on-board after CR2032 swap via the door switch sequence. Quick 5-minute DIY win.
Chip pairing for a fresh key is OBD-scanner-only. No on-board key learn exists for the Trax. Add-key with one working key takes about 25 minutes curbside.

Trax Safety Trivia
Quiet Trax safety detail: the 2015 launch year was the first model year for the subcompact crossover and it shipped with ten standard airbags, including segment-exclusive rear seat-mounted thorax airbags. Big safety move for the compact class at the time. Chevy basically brought full-size SUV airbag coverage to one of the smallest crossovers on the market.
