Out in Fernbrook, the streets in some of those tighter residential pockets can make a service call feel like a puzzle before you even get to the actual job. I got a call from someone parked in a covered spot at a townhouse complex in Ramona. The tow truck they had called earlier never made it in. Low clearance at the entrance, tight turns, assigned spots wedged against a block wall. The Trax was not going anywhere until someone came to it with the right tools.
I parked on the street and walked in.
He had one fob that had gotten progressively less reliable over a few months. Short range, then intermittent, then just done. He had been using the physical insert key to get in and out of the car, but the fob itself had stopped communicating entirely. He needed a working spare and wanted the original looked at too.
I checked the original fob first. CR2032 was still reading voltage, but one of the battery contacts had lost its spring tension from repeated battery swaps done the wrong way. Straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and it came back. Not fully reliable, which is expected at that point, but it confirmed the fob itself was not the issue.
Then I built and programmed a new fob on site. Connected through the diagnostic port, walked through the GM security pairing sequence, confirmed both fobs were enrolled and responding. Tested lock, unlock, and the trunk release. Walked the vehicle before packing up.
The whole job happened in his covered spot while his car sat exactly where it had been. He did not need a tow, did not need an appointment, and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted him. The complex entrance never became anyone's problem.
