2019 Chevrolet Trax
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2019 Chevrolet Trax Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A family was staying at a property in The Crosby over in Rancho Santa Fe, and the call came in mid-morning. The flip key had snapped at the pivot pin. The blade itself was fine, the fob housing was fine, but the whole thing was flopping around in one hand and the car wouldn't recognize it. They had one key total. No spare.

I drove out and met them in the driveway. The pivot pin failure is a known weak point on this style of flip key, and by the time it snaps all the way through, the blade usually stops seating correctly in the ignition, which is what was happening here. The car would occasionally start and occasionally throw a key-not-detected warning depending on how you held it going in.

I cut a new blade to the vehicle on site, transferred the transponder into a fresh flip housing, and programmed it through the OBD port. The whole job was done in the driveway. Both keys, old and new, tested across ignition start cycles before I packed up.

The dealer question came up at the end, the way it always does. I gave them an honest answer: the dealer would have had them tow it in, wait a few days for the part, and pay considerably more. This took about 45 minutes total, parked in front of the house.
