2018 Chevrolet Trax Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Westwood, the part of Rancho Bernardo that backs up against the open space trails, I got a text from a guy who had been hiking since early morning. His 2018 Trax was sitting in the trailhead lot.
His fob was somewhere on the trail, probably at the bottom of a ravine where his pocket had betrayed him on a steep section. He had no spare. He had his phone and a dead car.
He dropped me his GPS pin. I loaded up the van and drove out to him.
The lot was at the end of a long access road, not somewhere a tow truck gets to without a fight. That part actually mattered because his alternative was calling the dealer, who would have wanted the vehicle brought to them first.
I pulled up alongside the Trax and got to work on site. Decoded the lock, cut a fresh blade, built him a working fob from scratch, and ran the programming through the diagnostic port to register everything to the vehicle security system. The car started in that same dirt lot it had been sitting in all morning.
He mentioned the dealer had told him once before that key work takes a couple of hours minimum. His exact words were something like, "I thought I was sleeping out here." He was not. Start to finish, it was under an hour. He drove home the same afternoon.
The dealer comparison came up at the end almost as an afterthought. He had already saved a good chunk just by not needing a tow. The labor difference on top of that was its own thing.
