The call came from a parking lot near RB Town Center. She'd had her 2024 Trax since new, bought it with one key, and never got around to ordering a spare. That's the story I hear more than any other. Not stolen, not lost in the ocean. Just one key, used daily, until the day it stopped being usable.
The fob shell had cracked at the hinge point and the key blade had snapped off inside the door lock cylinder. She had the fob body in one hand and nothing else. The car was locked and she had no way in.
I extracted the broken blade fragment from the door cylinder first. Then I decoded the lock to get the cut depth. The chip inside the cracked fob housing was still intact, which mattered because it meant I could work with what was there rather than starting from scratch on an all-keys-lost procedure. I transferred the working chip into a new shell, programmed the replacement fob to the vehicle, and cut two blades so she'd have a spare this time.
She watched the whole thing from about two feet away and kept asking if the chip was really still good. I showed it to her before the transfer. It was fine. Thirty-something minutes and she had two working keys where she had zero.
The dealer had already been called before me. The appointment they offered was days out and the quote they gave had no room for negotiation. She paid a fraction of that and didn't move the car.
