What exactly is a remote flip key and how does it work on the 2015 Trax?

It's a single unit that does two jobs. The blade folds into the housing when you're not using it - that's the "flip" part - and it springs out when you press the release button on the side. You use that blade in the ignition cylinder to start the car.

Inside the housing there's a transponder chip. Every time you turn the ignition, the vehicle's immobilizer reads that chip. If the chip isn't recognized, the car won't start even if the blade is cut perfectly. The fob also has four buttons for the remote functions - locking, unlocking, and so on - which work on a separate RF signal from the transponder. That's why you can sometimes have one side fail without the other. Remote stops working, car still starts. Or vice versa.

Programming involves both sides: the transponder has to be enrolled to the immobilizer, and the remote has to be paired for the RF functions. One step doesn't automatically do the other.

Not on this vehicle. The 2015 Trax does not have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence for adding a new fob. Some older GM vehicles had ignition-turn relearn sequences you could do in the driveway, but the Trax requires a programming tool connected to the OBD port to enroll both the transponder and the remote. If you picked up an unprogrammed fob online, it'll fit the car but it won't do anything until it's been programmed by someone with the right equipment. Start with the CR2032. A weak battery in a flip fob will kill the remote range well before it affects the transponder side, which is why the car starts but the buttons do nothing. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated squarely against the contacts, and retest at different distances - not just standing next to the door.

If a new CR2032 doesn't bring it back, the fob itself may have a failed RF board or a cracked circuit from being dropped. The transponder side is separate, so the car will keep starting fine even if the remote is completely dead. At that point you're looking at a replacement fob that gets cut and programmed on site. The old one keeps working as a backup ignition key until you're ready.
