He was at the taco shop in South Poway and his backpack was gone. Someone grabbed it from the booth while he was at the counter. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. He borrowed the cashier's phone and called the police first, then his girlfriend, then me.

His 2022 Chevrolet Trax was sitting in the lot with zero working keys. The dealer told his girlfriend they could order parts but the car would need to be towed in, it would be several business days before they could get to it, and they recommended rekeying since the stolen fob could still unlock the doors. The combined estimate was not a small number.

All-keys-lost means I clear the entire key memory so the stolen fob is dead to the immobilizer, then build fresh from zero. I connected through the diagnostic port, accessed the body control module, wiped the old key data, and enrolled two new fobs. Then I cut the emergency insert blade for each one and walked through every function: lock, unlock, the hatch button, and confirming the fob would wake the car.

I was done before the police called back.

He drove home that night with two working keys. The stolen fob can still physically slip into a door lock, but the immobilizer will not let the engine run. That part mattered to him more than anything else. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a week of waiting, and a bill that was a lot heavier than what I charged. I don't think he even mentioned the price. He just asked if I wanted any tacos.
