Worst case on a 2016 Chevrolet Trax is an all-keys-lost smart key where another locksmith already attempted the job and left the body control module throwing "service theft deterrent" errors. It happens more than you'd think. A bad programming attempt or a power interruption mid-sequence can lock the BCM into a fault state that makes some locksmiths pack up and tell you to tow it to the dealer.
A customer's car was sitting at a body shop in Poway. The body shop had called another locksmith for a key replacement on his Trax, that locksmith got a "service theft deterrent" message after a failed programming attempt, and he walked away. The body shop called me.
I brought my ACDP bench tool as backup. I was able to read the body control module's security data directly from the chip when the OBD port was locked out by the previous bad attempt. I pulled the BCM data, cleared the fault, and rebuilt the security handshake from scratch before programming the new key. His smart fob, FCC ID KR55WK500733, was a 4-button proximity key. The theft deterrent message cleared once the BCM was reset, and the new fob learned on the first sequence. I showed the body shop team what went wrong so they'd know to warn customers if it ever came up again.
Total job was about an hour and a half, which is longer than normal. His bill was $173. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and $366 or more. I carry the bench tools specifically for situations where the first approach hits a wall. The job still got done same-day, on-site.
