2012 Chevrolet Impala
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2012 Impala need one?

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key but it has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn it in the ignition, the car's immobilizer sends a signal to that chip and checks whether it's authorized. If the chip responds correctly, the car starts. If the chip is missing, blank, or programmed to a different vehicle, the engine either won't crank past the security system or it'll start briefly and then cut out.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a key for the 2012 Impala?

For a 2012 Impala transponder key, I use a professional OBD-capable programmer that can read the immobilizer and register a new key to it. On this generation of Impala there's also an onboard relearn sequence that works when you have at least one working key present. All-keys-lost is a different story. That requires going through the OBD port with the right software to reset the system and enroll a new key from scratch.

Q: I have one working key for my 2012 Impala. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need one?

Make the spare now. All-keys-lost on a transponder vehicle costs more and takes longer than adding a second key while one still works. With an existing programmed key available, the process is faster and simpler. Lose that last key and the immobilizer has to be accessed differently to enroll a key with no reference point. Better a proper spare in a drawer than a hardware-store key with no chip programming at 9pm on a Saturday.

Q: My 2012 Impala security light stays on after I start it. Is something wrong with my key?

Depends on what the light does. On this generation, if the security light comes on briefly and then goes off after the engine starts, that's normal operation. The immobilizer checked the key, confirmed it, and cleared. If the light stays on steady while the car is running, or if the car cranks but stalls right after, that points to an immobilizer communication issue.

2012 Chevrolet Impala Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in Westside Escondido on a Saturday night when the call came in. Couple at the bowling alley near the west side. Their 2012 Impala wasn't going anywhere.

They'd had a spare key made at a hardware kiosk a few weeks back. Looked right, fit the door, turned in the ignition. But it had no chip in it, or a blank one that was never programmed. The original key had broken off in someone's pocket, and now they were standing in the parking lot with only the unprogrammed copy and no way to start the car.

I pulled up with the right blank already in stock. Cut it to the vehicle on site, ran the security relearn through the OBD port, and had the new key starting the car inside of 30 minutes. The whole job done before they finished their last game.

The hardware store key went in the trash. The dealer would have told them Monday morning, minimum, and charged them a good chunk more for the privilege of waiting.

When the parts are on the van and the tools are ready, a Saturday night call is no different from a Tuesday afternoon.

Chevrolet Impala Mobile Service FAQ

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to watch for. First, they won't give you a firm total price for your specific vehicle on the phone. Second, they show up and either don't have the right blank or don't have equipment that can actually program a Chevy transponder. Third, fees start multiplying once they're in your driveway. A real locksmith quotes you one number before the work starts. Programming fee, cut fee, service call, all of it.
