Three things to watch for. First, they won't give you a firm total price for your specific vehicle on the phone. Second, they show up and either don't have the right blank or don't have equipment that can actually program a Chevy transponder. Third, fees start multiplying once they're in your driveway.

A real locksmith quotes you one number before the work starts. Programming fee, cut fee, service call, all of it. If they're hedging on price until they see the car, that's your sign to hang up.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2012 Impala need one?

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key but it has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn it in the ignition, the car's immobilizer sends a signal to that chip and checks whether it's authorized. If the chip responds correctly, the car starts. If the chip is missing, blank, or programmed to a different vehicle, the engine either won't crank past the security system or it'll start briefly and then cut out.

The 2012 Impala has no remote or fob on the base key setup. No buttons, no lock or unlock, no battery to replace. It's purely a key you turn. The chip is what makes it different from a hardware store copy, and that chip has to be programmed specifically to your car's immobilizer before it functions as a real key.

Depends on what the light does. On this generation, if the security light comes on briefly and then goes off after the engine starts, that's normal operation. The immobilizer checked the key, confirmed it, and cleared.

If the light stays on steady while the car is running, or if the car cranks but stalls right after, that points to an immobilizer communication issue. Could be the key's chip, could be the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder not reading it cleanly, could be the immobilizer itself. That's a diagnose-first situation.
