A body shop in Downtown IB called me about a 2008 Impala that another locksmith had already touched. The owner needed a replacement key, the first locksmith attempted the job, hit a wall when the vehicle security system threw a warning after a failed programming sequence, and walked away. The body shop was left holding the car and a frustrated customer.
When I got there, the OBD port was essentially non-cooperative because of the incomplete attempt before me. The immobilizer was sitting in a fault state. The car would crank but cut out immediately every time.

I pulled the body control module, read the security data directly off the chip, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the handshake from the ground up before enrolling the new key. The whole job took close to an hour and a half, which is longer than a standard key replacement on these. But it got done that day, in the parking lot of that body shop, for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged after a flatbed ride and a multi-day wait. I walked the body shop through what caused the fault so they'd know what to tell customers if they ever saw it again.
