He was at a taco spot in Rancho Santa Fe, over near Fairbanks Ranch, and his backpack walked out the door without him. Someone grabbed it off the booth while he was at the counter. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it gone.
He borrowed the cashier's phone. Called the police, then his girlfriend, then me.
His 2011 Chevrolet HHR was sitting in the lot with no keys at all. His girlfriend had already called the dealer while he was waiting for the cops. They said they could order a key, but the car would need to be towed in, and since the stolen key was still out there, they strongly suggested a rekey on top of everything else. The estimate was steep, the timeline was several business days, and he'd be without the car the whole time.
I got there that evening. All-keys-lost on a transponder vehicle is a different job than adding a spare. When a working key is present, the system uses it to authorize the new one. With no key at all, I go in through the diagnostic port, wipe the key memory completely so the stolen key is dead to the immobilizer, and then program fresh keys from scratch. That's the only way to guarantee the stolen key won't start the car again.
I decoded the lock, cut two new keys to the vehicle, and ran both through programming on site. Both keys fired the engine. Both got tested, not just one.
He drove home that night. The stolen key can still physically turn the lock cylinder, but the immobilizer won't let the engine run. That's the point of wiping the memory entirely. The dealer estimate, the tow, and the waiting week didn't happen.
