2007 Chevrolet HHR
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you erase a lost or stolen key for my 2007 HHR so it can't start the car anymore?

Yes. When a new key is enrolled through an all-keys-lost procedure, the immobilizer wipes the previously registered transponders and only recognizes the keys present during that session. A lost key from before that visit won't start the car. One thing to keep in mind with the 2007 HHR specifically: the transponder key also has a physical blade that operates the door and ignition cylinder.

Q: My 2007 HHR cranks fine but the engine starts and immediately stalls. Is this a key problem?

That pattern, cranks strong but dies in one or two seconds, is a classic immobilizer rejection. The ignition cylinder is reading the key blade fine mechanically, but the transponder chip in the key head is either not enrolled, enrolled incorrectly, or damaged. The vehicle security system sees an unrecognized chip and shuts fuel delivery down. Worth checking: look at the security light on the dash when this happens.

Q: I bought a replacement key online for my 2007 HHR. Can I program it myself?

Some older GM transponder key vehicles do have an onboard relearn sequence you can attempt without tools. The 2007 HHR has a procedure that requires at least one already-working programmed key to initiate. If you have a working key and want to add a second, that onboard sequence may be available. If you are in an all-keys-lost situation with no working key, that route is closed and you need a programmer to enroll through the diagnostic port.

Q: How long does a transponder key replacement take for a 2007 HHR, and do I need to be at a dealer?

You don't need a dealer. The whole job runs about 30 to 45 minutes on site. I come to you in San Marcos, cut the blade to your vehicle, and program the transponder. The dealer process involves dropping the car off, waiting for a service writer, and paying dealer labor rates on top of parts. Mobile is faster and costs a fraction of that route.

2007 Chevrolet HHR Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Richland area of San Marcos, I got a call from a guy parked in a Pep Boys lot. He had already been through it once with another locksmith he found through a cheap Google ad. That guy showed up, charged him a number that made my eyebrows go up, handed him a key that cranked the engine and immediately stalled, then stopped answering texts.

He found me through Google Guaranteed and the first thing he asked was how to tell if a locksmith was actually licensed. Completely fair. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone and told him to look it up while we were still talking. He did. That seemed to settle it.

When I got there, the issue was clear. The key he had been given was cut close but not right, and the transponder had not been properly enrolled. The immobilizer was rejecting it. Engine would fire for about a second and quit, every single time.

I cut a fresh key blade to the correct spec for his HHR, programmed the transponder chip using my programmer to go through the full immobilizer enrollment sequence, and verified a clean start with the engine fully running, not just catching and dying.

The whole thing took about forty minutes in the parking lot. He paid exactly what I quoted him on the phone. The dealer had been mentioned at some point in the conversation, but honestly it never got far. He had already paid one person who didn't finish the job. He wasn't interested in a second disappointment.

Chevrolet HHR Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2007 HHR?▼

Skip the tow and call a mobile locksmith. All-keys-lost on the 2007 HHR means there are no working enrolled keys left, so the car won't start. A dealer will typically want the vehicle brought in, which means a tow on top of their already steep key cost. We handle the whole job on site: cut the new key blade to your lock, enroll the transponder through the immobilizer, and verify a clean start before we leave. No tow.
