2014 Chevrolet Equinox
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Three things to ask any locksmith before they show up: a state license number, the actual company name, and a firm written price for your specific vehicle before any work starts. Scam operations quote a low number on the phone and then add surprise fees once they are in your driveway. Owners have reported being quoted one price for a GM key job and getting hit with a separate programming fee that more than doubled the bill at the end.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. A properly done replacement on the 2014 Equinox covers both the remote functions and the transponder that authorizes the engine to run. We test every button and confirm the vehicle starts before we leave the job. Some owners have paid other services for a fob where the buttons worked inconsistently or the car needed multiple attempts to start. We verify everything on site in Old Town National City.

Q: I bought a replacement flip fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

The 2014 Equinox does not have a user-accessible onboard programming sequence for the transponder. The remote-only functions sometimes get paired through an ignition-cycle procedure if a second working key is present, but that only handles the lock and unlock side. The transponder chip that tells the immobilizer to allow the engine to start has to be programmed with diagnostic equipment. So if you bought a fob online, you still need someone with the right tools to finish the job.

Q: My Equinox starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder is doing its job. Dead remote buttons on a flip fob usually point to one of three things: a dead or weak CR2032, a battery contact that got bent when someone pried the case open instead of popping it correctly, or a dropped fob where the internal circuit got knocked loose. Start with a fresh CR2032 and check that the contacts are sitting flat and clean.

2014 Chevrolet Equinox Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions still to fill. The 2014 Equinox wouldn't start in the parking lot. She pressed the unlock button on the flip fob and nothing happened. Tried the lock button. Nothing. She got in with the manual key, sat down, and the car just sat there with her.

She called the dealer. Closed. Then she called me, and I was about 20 minutes out from Old Town National City.

When I got there, I did the battery first. CR2032, confirmed dead. Swapped it, tested the remote. Lock and unlock came back, but the car still wasn't starting cleanly. That's when I checked the transponder side. The fob had been dropped enough times that the internal connection between the chip and the blade assembly had gotten loose. The remote circuitry ran on the battery, but the transponder that talks to the immobilizer was intermittent. That's a different fix from a battery swap.

I replaced the fob, programmed the new one through the OBD port, and walked every button with her watching. Then I showed her the backup start procedure, because if a fob ever dies on her again she should know that move before she's in a parking lot at 7pm.

From her call to the engine running was under an hour. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer being closed wasn't even the point. The point was that this one needed proper diagnosis on site, not just a battery and a prayer.
