She had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions still to fill. The 2014 Equinox wouldn't start in the parking lot. She pressed the unlock button on the flip fob and nothing happened. Tried the lock button. Nothing. She got in with the manual key, sat down, and the car just sat there with her.

When I got there, I did the battery first. CR2032, confirmed dead. Swapped it, tested the remote. Lock and unlock came back, but the car still wasn't starting cleanly. That's when I checked the transponder side. The fob had been dropped enough times that the internal connection between the chip and the blade assembly had gotten loose. The remote circuitry ran on the battery, but the transponder that talks to the immobilizer was intermittent. That's a different fix from a battery swap.
I replaced the fob, programmed the new one through the OBD port, and walked every button with her watching. Then I showed her the backup start procedure, because if a fob ever dies on her again she should know that move before she's in a parking lot at 7pm.
From her call to the engine running was under an hour. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer being closed wasn't even the point. The point was that this one needed proper diagnosis on site, not just a battery and a prayer.
