I got a call from a guy parked near the Mission San Luis Rey Area, over on one of the side streets off Bonsall Drive. He had his 2021 Envision but no working fob. Not lost, just dead. He had already swapped the battery himself, which was the right first move, but the fob was still not waking the car up. No passive unlock when he walked up, no response from the start button.
He had gone to the dealer earlier that week and the visit did not go well. They told him the fob needed to be replaced and programmed, gave him a timeframe that involved leaving the car, and sent him home with a number he was not happy about.
I pulled up, popped the fob open on the hood to confirm the new CR2032 he had put in was seated right. It was. The battery was fine, the contacts looked clean. So I ran diagnostics through the OBD port and pulled a stored fault pointing to the fob not being recognized by the vehicle security system. That is a different problem than a dead battery. The link between the fob and the vehicle had dropped, which can happen after certain electrical events or battery swaps if the module loses its pairing.
Re-enrollment through the scan tool brought it back. The passive entry started responding, the start button saw the fob, and everything worked the way it should. He stood there, walked toward the car, heard the doors unlock automatically, and just kind of laughed.
He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. Took me about 25 minutes on site.
