How Buick Lucerne Keys Have Changed
First Generation (Early)
Onboard programming keeps the early Lucerne refreshingly approachable. Your 2006-2007 model runs a standard transponder key with an ID46 chip behind GM's Passlock or VATS-derived immobilizer. Three-button setup, zero remote-start hardware, the key pairs through ignition cycling with no scan tool in the loop.
First Generation (Mid)
Mid-generation upgrade brought a five-button remote head with remote-start baked in. Your 2008-2009 Lucerne keeps the ID46 chip but pairs to GM's updated immobilizer architecture. Programming works through onboard cycling or OBD-II, and the fob FCC IDs are either OUC60221 or OUC60270.
First Generation (Late)
Late-generation Lucerne kept the five-button remote head with the ID46 chip from the mid years. The onboard ten-minute relearn still handles all-keys-lost cleanly, which keeps the process simple. Some 2010-2011 builds occasionally need an OBD scanner to clear a stubborn BCM during programming.
Which Lucerne Fob Are You Holding?
Standard turn-key blade with a transponder chip hidden under the molded head. Three buttons for lock, unlock, trunk. No remote-start hardware on these early builds.
Chunky integrated remote head with five buttons living in the head, including the remote-start button. The transponder chip and remote board share one molded body, so a single key replacement covers everything.
Lucerne Pricing by Generation
Pricing covers cutting, transponder programming, and remote programming, all at your location.

Same key, same chip, identical result. Roughly half the price, and you skip the tow bill entirely.
Common Buick Lucerne Key Failures
Incorrect Key Blank Rejection
Owners blame programming when the actual problem is the blank. Cheap non-GM-compatible blanks, especially wrong HU101 variants, run 25% higher failure rates on Lucerne pairings. Marco's trucks only carry B111-PT blanks with the correct ID46 chip.
Security Light Timing Failure
First diagnostic during a failed relearn is whether the security telltale transitions at the end of each ten-minute thirty-second cycle. If it never extinguishes, timing slipped or the BCM is not seeing the key. Marco's trucks carry GM-compatible OBD kit.
BCM Glitches in Programming
The BCM on 2008-2011 Lucernes occasionally refuses a fresh transponder code, throwing a theft-deterrent fault. Electronic hiccup, not a key fault. Marco resets with Autel IM608 or VVDI, clears codes, reruns programming. Cheaper than the $500 ECM swap.
Can You Self-Program a Lucerne Key at Home?
With one working key in hand, yes. Working key in, rotate ON for one second, OFF, slide the new blank in, rotate ON. All-keys-lost gets a ten-minute relearn instead: three cycles of ten minutes thirty seconds each, watching the security telltale. Timing has to be precise.
Same add-key procedure with one working key. Remote-start fob pairs separately through the Driver Info Center display. All keys lost? The ten-minute relearn still runs but wipes every previously programmed key. BCM giving you trouble? Professional OBD-II kit takes it from there.
Same procedures as the 2008-2009 builds. Onboard programming covers most scenarios, but some 2010-2011 Lucernes need an OBD scanner if the BCM refuses to cooperate. Remote programs separately via the trip odometer reset button or the radio DISP button.

Buick Trivia
Worth knowing for the Lucerne: GM gave this sedan a 30-minute onboard programming cycle accessible through nothing more elaborate than ignition key rotations. No scan tools, no dealer software, no special hardware required. One of the few GM vehicles from the era where an all-keys-lost scenario resolves with just a correctly-cut transponder blank and a steady half-hour of patience.
