How Rendezvous Key Security Has Evolved
Pass-Key III Era
Remote head key carrying a Texas 4D (ID46) transponder and three buttons on the head for lock, unlock, trunk. Your Rendezvous rides GM's Pass-Key III immobilizer, which means the chip in your blade handshakes with a coil ring around the ignition cylinder on every start. Programming runs onboard through ignition cycles, so no scan tool needs to ride out for these early years.
Pass-Key III+ Transition
Same Texas 4D (ID46) chip on the remote head, but GM upgraded some 2005 builds to the Pass-Key III+ system mid-year. The key itself looks identical to the 2002-2004 unit: three buttons, same CR2032 cell, same standard milled blade. Onboard programming still runs here, though we always verify by VIN because the rollout was not consistent across every assembly date.
Crypto 4D Upgrade
Remote head key carrying a Texas Crypto 4D (ID46) chip behind the full Pass-Key III+ immobilizer. This is where GM genuinely tightened things up. The encryption on the chip got stronger, and programming now demands OBD-II scan tool access rather than the simple ignition cycle drill. Our trucks run Autel IM608 or Tech2 for these at the curb.
Which Rendezvous Fob Are You Holding?
Standard milled blade transponder key with three buttons baked into the head. The Texas 4D (ID46) chip handshakes with the Pass-Key III immobilizer on every cylinder cycle.
Physically the same key as the earlier Rendezvous, but some 2005 builds left the factory with the upgraded Pass-Key III+ architecture. We verify which system yours runs before cutting anything.
Visually identical to the earlier key, but the Texas Crypto 4D (ID46) chip inside the head carries stronger encryption. Demands OBD-II programming instead of the ignition relearn drill.

Common Rendezvous Key Failures
Pass-Key III Resistor Pellet Wear
Rotate the key, security telltale flashes, engine refuses to crank? The transponder chip in the head aged out and the immobilizer cannot read it cleanly. Marco clones the chip onto a fresh blank at the curb, typically inside half an hour.
Transponder Chip Failure
The Texas 4D chip can delaminate or fail outright, especially on 2005-2007 builds. The blade rotates the cylinder normally but Pass-Key III+ gets zero signal back. Marco's trucks carry replacement blanks with the correct ID46 silicon.
Ignition Cylinder Sticking
First diagnostic on a 2002-2005 Rendezvous refusing to start is the ignition cylinder. Debris inside prevents clean reads. Sometimes cleaning solves it. Sometimes a full swap is the fix. Marco scopes it at the curb before recommending parts.
Fob Battery Drain
Owners blame the remote when buttons stop working. Nine in ten cases it is a dead CR2032 or contact corrosion. Remote and transponder are independent, so the SUV still starts. Pop the case, swap the cell. Still unresponsive? (619) 876-1271.
Can You Self-Program a Rendezvous Key at Home?
Yes, with a properly cut transponder blank carrying the correct ID46 chip. GM ten-minute relearn drill through the ignition: fresh key in, rotate ON, hold for ten minutes thirty seconds until the security telltale extinguishes, then cycle OFF and back ON twice more with matching timing. Field reports peg success around 75-85 percent, but the drill wipes every previously paired key.
Yes, the same ten-minute relearn covers most 2005 builds. Pre-cut blank with the correct Texas 4D (ID46) chip is mandatory. Working key already in hand? The add-key drill closes faster: working key in, rotate ON for five seconds, swap to the new blank inside five seconds, wait for the telltale to extinguish.
The ten-minute relearn can still close on some 2006-2007 builds, but the Crypto 4D chip and Pass-Key III+ system make it less reliable without a scan tool. If the onboard drill fails, OBD-II programming with a tool like the Autel IM608 picks up the slack. Marco handles both methods at the curb.

Buick Trivia
Crossover history worth knowing: Buick launched the Rendezvous in 2001 as GM's first attempt at blurring the line between minivan and SUV. It rode the U100 platform alongside the polarizing Pontiac Aztek, but Buick wrapped it in softer styling and a quieter cabin. From day one it carried GM's Pass-Key III immobilizer, making it one of the earliest crossovers to ship with full transponder security as factory standard.
