2007 Buick Rendezvous Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a customer near Ferry Landing in Coronado. He'd taken his 2007 Rendezvous to a shop that wasn't a locksmith, just a general garage that figured they could handle it. They tried to program a replacement transponder key, the car battery dropped mid-cycle, and the process never completed. After that, the Rendezvous wouldn't accept any key programming at all through normal OBD methods. The garage told him the body control module had failed and needed to be replaced. The quote they handed him covered a new module, two keys, and programming. It was a lot of money for a repair that, in my read of the situation, wasn't actually necessary.
When I got there, I ran my own diagnostics first. The module was communicating fine. It wasn't dead. What had happened was the security data inside the module had been partially written during the failed attempt and left in a corrupted state. The module was rejecting new key registrations because it was sitting on bad data, not because it had failed as a component.
I was able to access the module's memory, read out the security image, identify the corrupted key entry, and repair the data without pulling the module off the car. Once the corrected image was written back, I registered a new transponder key. The module accepted it on the first attempt.
The whole job took close to two hours. The other shop's quote was for parts and labor that were never going to fix what was actually wrong. I showed the garage what had happened so they'd know what they were looking at if they saw it again.
The Rendezvous is a discontinued model and parts aren't getting cheaper. Replacing a module that doesn't need replacing on one of these is a costly mistake.
