Riviera Key Systems by Generation

8th Generation

1996-1997

GM security got real on the Riviera with this generation. Your key carries PASS-Key II with a resistor pellet built into the key shank that the ignition cylinder reads mechanically. No transponder chip lives on these keys; the pellet alone gates the immobilizer. The remote is a separate 4-button fob (FCC KOBUT1BT) handling lock, unlock, trunk, and panic, and we pair it onboard without needing a dealer PIN.

8th Generation Refresh

1998-1999

Same PASS-Key II architecture and resistor pellet as the earlier Rivieras, so the security story stayed put. What changed is the remote now drives memory seat and mirror presets through the unlock button, a thoughtful touch for a personal luxury coupe two people might share. Programming still runs onboard, still straightforward, and we handle the whole thing in your driveway.

🔑
Transponder Key with 4-Button Remote
1996-1997

Standard milled blade with a built-in resistor pellet that the PASS-Key II cylinder reads mechanically, plus a separate 4-button remote fob on the keychain. The key starts the engine, the fob handles locks and trunk.

🔑
Transponder Key with 4-Button Remote (Memory Seats)
1998-1999

Same key plus fob setup as the earlier Riviera, but now the unlock button doubles as your memory seat and mirror preset trigger. Handy when two drivers share the coupe.

Common Riviera Key Failures

🔧

MALL Module Capacitor Failure

Damaged capacitor inside the MALL module triggers weird symptoms in SD Rivieras. Key-in-ignition chime falls silent, seat belt warning vanishes, lights erratic, power door cylinders quit. NHTSA recall 95V204000. Replacement? Marco reprograms keys at the curb.

🔑

PASS-Key II Transponder Sync Loss

First diagnostic on a no-start Riviera is the security telltale. Flashing? PASS-Key II lost sync with your resistor pellet, usually after a dead battery or BCM hiccup. Marco reprograms with GM-compatible kit. Common across Mira Mesa and El Cajon.

🔋

Remote Key Fob Battery Drain

Fob buttons work Monday, ignore you by Friday? The KOBUT1BT remote constantly polls for signal, burning CR2032 cells faster than expected. Pop the back cover, slide a fresh cell in. Cycles back? Marco's trucks carry compatible remotes across San Diego.

Can You Self-Program a Riviera Key at Home?

1996-1999
Yes - DIY Possible

Partial path for the Riviera. The remote fob can be paired in your driveway using the OBD jumper drill (pins 4 and 8) or the door unlock hold method, both documented in your owner manual. But the PASS-Key II resistor pellet programming demands professional onboard work with a Tech 2 or compatible kit. (619) 876-1271 for that half.

Buick Trivia

Underrated piece of GM security history: the 1996-1999 Riviera's PASS-Key II was one of GM's earliest two-layer immobilizer systems. The resistor pellet sat physically embedded in the key shank, and tiny contacts inside the ignition cylinder read its resistance value before any electronic handshake could even begin. Two genuine layers of security on a single key, back when most cars still rolled with plain metal blanks carrying no electronics whatsoever.
