2002 Buick Rendezvous
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a transponder key and why does it matter for my 2002 Rendezvous?

The blade turns the ignition mechanically. That part's simple. But inside the plastic key head there's a small chip. When you turn the key, the immobilizer sends a signal, the chip responds with the right code, and the system allows the engine to run. No chip match, no start, even if the blade is cut perfectly. For the Rendezvous, a non-transponder key will crank the engine but it won't fire, or it'll start briefly and stall.

Q: What if I need a key late at night or on the weekend in Spring Valley?

We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, Spring Valley included. Weekends, most holidays, Sunday evenings, call us. We don't add fees for evening or weekend calls. If we're available, we come out.

Q: My 2002 Rendezvous starts then immediately stalls. Could that be a key problem?

That start-and-stall pattern is one of the most recognized signs of an immobilizer issue on this generation of GM vehicles. It means the engine fired on the mechanical crank but the vehicle security system didn't finish authorizing the key, so it cut the engine off. This happens when the transponder chip isn't being read correctly, when a replacement key was cut but never programmed, or when the chip inside an old key has degraded.

Q: I only have one key left for my Rendezvous. Should I get a spare made now or wait until it fails?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a transponder vehicle from this era takes longer and costs more than adding a second key while you still have a working one. A spare takes maybe 20 to 30 minutes. Losing your last key means a full immobilizer access procedure through the OBD port before anything else can happen.

2002 Buick Rendezvous Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Spring Valley Village called me on a Sunday afternoon. His 2002 Rendezvous had one key left, and that key had snapped at the neck, right where the blade meets the plastic head. The blade was still stuck in the door lock. He'd been using a pair of pliers to start the car for two weeks.

The street was tight, one of those older Spring Valley neighborhoods where the driveways are short and cars park half on the curb. I set up on the sidewalk next to the Rendezvous and started with the door lock, extracting the broken blade with the right hook picks so I wouldn't damage the cylinder. Took about four minutes.

Then I cut a new key blade to match the vehicle and programmed the transponder chip to the immobilizer on site. Because he still had the broken original, technically I had a working reference even though it was in two pieces. I used that to confirm the cut before I finalized the new key, then verified the chip was accepted by starting the car cold, shutting it off, waiting, and starting it again. Second start is the one that proves the immobilizer accepted it and it wasn't just a timing fluke.

He asked if the dealer could've done it faster. I told him the dealer would've wanted the car towed in, ordered the key, and had him back Tuesday at the earliest. He drove himself to get lunch twenty minutes after I got there.

Does the 2002 Buick Rendezvous key have remote buttons on it?▼

The 2002 Rendezvous transponder key is a turn-key ignition key. Depending on what was ordered with the vehicle, some owners have a separate key fob for the door locks that works independently, but the ignition key itself is a transponder key that goes into a cylinder. It is not a push-button or proximity setup. When you call, we sort out exactly what you have so we show up with the right blank and the right equipment.
