How Buick Changed the LeSabre Key Over Time
VATS Resistor Era
Turn-key cylinder operation looks normal, but a small resistor pellet embedded in the blade does the actual security work. Your 1995-1999 LeSabre reads that pellet's resistance value against one of fifteen possible matches stored in the VATS module; mismatch means the starter stays dead. No transponder chip exists on these keys, only the pellet plus VATS gating. Programming demands EEPROM access to clone or learn the pellet code, which puts it firmly in pro-tools territory.
PK3 Transition
GM phased the resistor pellet out in favor of a real transponder during these overlap years. Your key now carries a Texas 4C chip riding the PK3 immobilizer architecture. Programming moves onboard, simpler than the EEPROM era, but the right kit still has to confirm your ECM type before anything writes.
PK3+ Remote Head Key
This is where the LeSabre got a proper remote head key with the buttons fused into the molded head. FCC KOBLEAR1XT, Texas 4D chip behind PK3+, programming runs through the OBD-II port under the dash. We pull the PIN, write the chip, the new key fires the starter. Standard procedure on the van.
Which LeSabre Fob Are You Holding?
Standard turn-key blade with a resistor pellet hidden inside the blade itself, paired with a separate remote fob on the keychain for door functions. The key alone handles starting; the fob handles lock and unlock.
Visually nearly identical to the earlier blade, but the resistor pellet is gone. A Texas 4C transponder chip now lives inside the molded head and handshakes with PK3 to authorize the starter.
Buttons now live in the head, so the whole thing is one piece on your keychain. Texas 4D chip handles immobilizer duty, the integrated remote handles your locks and trunk.

LeSabre Key Failures We See Most
VATS Failure
Your 1995-1999 LeSabre cranks but refuses to fire with SECURITY illuminated? The VATS contact ring corrodes and stops reading the resistor pellet. Marco measures pellet resistance in San Diego, scopes the contacts, and cuts a fresh matched key or bypasses the VATS module.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners assume the battery is dead when their 1999-2005 LeSabre stops recognizing the key. Actual culprit is a degraded antenna ring around the cylinder or a weakening transponder chip. Marco bench-tests ring and chip separately to pin the failure.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Corrosion inside the fob housing is why your 2000-2005 LeSabre remote stops working, even with a fresh CR2032. The pads oxidize, the fob loses pairing. Marco cleans the contacts, installs a fresh cell, and runs a full relearn so every remote resyncs.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
Before any programming, the first check is whether the key is even the problem. Power door cylinder actuators across 1995-2005 LeSabre builds wear out and stop responding. Owners assume pairing loss, but the actuator failed. Marco scopes the fob signal first in SD.
Can You Self-Program a LeSabre Key at Home?
Remote half is DIY-friendly. The Data Link Port jumper drill under the dash pairs the remote fob without any tools. What it does not touch is the transponder side; that work requires EEPROM access and professional kit, period.
With at least one working key already in hand, yes. GM ignition relearn drill: original key in, rotate ON, OFF, pull, slide the new blank in within ten seconds, watch the SECURITY light extinguish. Zero tools. All-keys-lost is a different beast and needs professional OBD-II programming.

Buick Trivia
The 1995-1999 Buick LeSabre used GM VATS system with 15 possible resistor values embedded in the key blade, making it one of the last GM models before full transponder adoption. Fifteen tiny resistance values standing between a thief and your car. Analog security at its most stubborn.
