2001 Buick Lesabre
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Buick Lesabre Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked in a lot off the Millenia area of Chula Vista. She had a 2001 Buick LeSabre, her only key, and the car would not start. It would crank, catch for a second, then die. Classic immobilizer behavior on these.

She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in and plan for at least a day, maybe two, while they sourced the right transponder key blank and got it on the schedule. She had her kid with her and nowhere to go.

I pulled up, confirmed the crank-and-die pattern, and checked the dash. The security light was telling the story. Her existing key was worn at the head, and the chip inside was reading inconsistently. On a 2001 LeSabre, that chip talks to the vehicle security system through a coil ring around the ignition cylinder. When the read fails, the system kills fuel. Simple in theory, annoying in a parking lot.

I cut a new key blade to her vehicle using the door lock as a reference, transferred nothing because this chip type doesn't transfer, and programmed a fresh transponder to the car on site using my diagnostic equipment. Confirmed the security light cleared and the engine held at idle without cutting out.

Total time, about 45 minutes. She drove out of that lot with a working key and a spare in her bag. The dealer route would have meant a tow truck, a wait, and days without the car. She saved a good chunk and got it handled the same afternoon.
