1999 Buick Lesabre
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is this type of remote and how does it work with the car?

The 1999 LeSabre uses a detached remote fob paired with a conventional ignition blade. The fob communicates with the body control module using a rolling code, meaning the signal changes with every button press so it can't easily be cloned or replayed. The blade itself on this generation also carries an anti-theft element that the car checks at startup. Both pieces matter. The fob handles door locks and trunk from a distance.

Q: What if my key broke off inside the ignition?

That's an extraction job first. I remove the broken piece from the cylinder before anything else. Once it's out, I check whether the cylinder itself took any damage, because a key that snapped under torque can bend or score the internal wafers, and then even a fresh-cut blade won't turn cleanly. I assess that on site. If the cylinder is still serviceable, we cut a new blade and go.

Q: My fob stopped working right after I replaced the battery. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on late-90s GM fobs. Swapping the battery can break the sync between the fob and the body control module, especially if the battery was fully dead before the swap. The fix is usually a resync, not a new fob. On these older Buicks, there's an onboard procedure you can run without any tools, just the ignition and the fob buttons in a specific sequence.

Q: Can I just buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

On a 1999 LeSabre, there is actually an onboard add-a-key procedure that works without external tools, which is different from most newer vehicles. That said, it only works if you still have at least one working programmed fob to run the sequence with. All-keys-lost, meaning no working fob at all, is a different situation and does require programming equipment.

1999 Buick Lesabre Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Seven Oaks on a Saturday morning. Guy flags me down from his driveway, which I wasn't expecting, but he'd been watching for my van. His 1999 Lesabre had been sitting for a few days because he didn't trust the fob. Locks were acting up, remote range had dropped to arm's length, and one button had stopped responding entirely.

He'd already swapped the battery. New CR2032, correct size, seated properly. Still weak.

I pulled the fob apart on the hood. The battery contact looked fine at a glance, but when I put a little pressure on it, there was just enough flex in the clip to break contact under vibration. Classic for a fob this age. The plastic housing had also developed a hairline crack near one corner, probably from being dropped, and it was letting the internal board shift slightly inside the case.

Replaced the fob, reprogrammed it to the car using the onboard procedure right there in the driveway, and walked the parking pad doing range tests while he watched from the front step. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. All four buttons. Three clean starts on the blade side.

He mentioned he'd called the dealer first out of habit. They quoted him a wait and a number that made him set the phone down. He found me about ten minutes later.

The whole job was done before his coffee got cold.

Buick Lesabre Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 1999 Buick LeSabre key fob have?▼

Four. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. These are separate from the ignition key on this generation, so you're dealing with a fob and a blade as two distinct pieces. If you've lost just the fob, we handle that. Lost just the blade, same deal. Lost both, we cover the whole setup in one visit.
