2000 Buick Lesabre
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2000 Buick Lesabre Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked outside a business near Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad. He'd had a spare key made at a hardware store, thought he was covered.

The blade worked fine, turned the ignition no problem. But every time he tried to start it, the engine caught for a second and then shut right back off. He thought the car had developed some kind of fuel or electrical issue and had already been on the phone with a tow company.

I asked him one question: was the spare key made at a kiosk or a hardware counter? He said yes. That told me everything.

The 2000 LeSabre uses a transponder system. The chip inside the key head has to be read by the vehicle's immobilizer before it allows the engine to keep running. A hardware store copies the blade perfectly and ignores the chip entirely. The car does exactly what it's supposed to do when it sees an unrecognized key: it starts and immediately kills the engine. Security doing its job.

I drove out, cut and programmed a proper replacement key on site. He watched the engine start and stay running like it was the most dramatic thing he'd seen all week. Maybe it was.

He mentioned the hardware store had charged him for the copy. I didn't rub it in. But he did say the dealer had quoted him a number that made him put the phone down. He paid a fraction of that, parked on the street in Bressi Ranch, no tow, no waiting room.
