1998 Buick Lesabre
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen fob so it can't be used anymore?

Yes. When we do a security reset or reprogram the remotes, we wipe all previously stored fob data and register only the ones you authorize. Any fob that was lost or stolen won't lock, unlock, or do anything to the vehicle after that. Worth doing if a fob went missing and you're not sure where it ended up.

Q: My 1998 LeSabre fob doesn't have a hidden blade inside it. How do I get in if the fob battery dies?

That's correct. The '98 LeSabre fob is a remote-only unit with no emergency blade folded inside. Your ignition key is a separate metal key, and that same key cuts to your door lock. So if the fob dies, you're not locked out, you just use your regular key in the door cylinder the old-fashioned way. Keep that key on you and the fob battery being dead is more of an inconvenience than a crisis.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself to my '98 LeSabre?

This is one of those cases where the older car actually works in your favor. The 1998 LeSabre uses an onboard programming sequence for the remote. If the replacement fob is the correct one for this vehicle, and the factory FCC ID on the fob matches what your car is set up to accept, you may be able to run the relearn yourself without any tools.

Q: The locks and trunk work with the fob but the car cranks and won't stay running. Is that the fob or the key?

That's a different system entirely. The fob on your LeSabre only runs the remote functions. Starting and staying running is handled by the ignition key side and the vehicle security system. If the engine starts and immediately stalls, that points to an anti-theft issue with the key, not the fob. The two are separate. A fob that works perfectly won't fix a stall condition.

1998 Buick Lesabre Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in San Diego Country Estates, a woman called about her 1998 LeSabre. Her fob had stopped working entirely. Locks, trunk release, panic, nothing. She'd already put in a new CR2032 herself, which was the right first move, but it didn't change anything.

When I got there, the fob looked fine physically. No cracks, no corrosion on the battery contacts. I walked her through the onboard relearn and the fob came right back. All four buttons working, trunk popping, the whole deal.

She mentioned she'd read online that the car needed to go to a dealer for this. That's not accurate for a '98. The dealer story is more relevant to later generations where GM moved the programming into diagnostic-only territory. This one you can actually relearn on site without plugging anything in, as long as the fob itself is still functional.

She'd had the car a long time. It was clean, well-kept, and she knew it well. The fob issue had been building for a few weeks and she'd been manually locking everything in the meantime. Took about ten minutes total. She seemed almost annoyed it was that simple, in the good way.

Buick Lesabre Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 1998 LeSabre?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before calling a dealer or tow truck. On a '98 LeSabre, all-keys-lost means we need to cut a new ignition key and get it recognized by the vehicle security system, plus resync whatever fob you want to run. We come to your location in Ramona, no tow needed. The price you get on the phone is what you pay.
